Honestly, I would like to know more about you! You are young, and very enthusiastic about gems. I think you have a promising future ahead of you. Would you mind sharing who you are, what you love, what you eat...whatever you want to talk about. I especially want to know about your kids...Having a child with Down syndrome and Asperger''s is very difficult, yet you always come across as optimistic and positive.!

I totally agree!

Awww, you are so sweet crasru!!!

Who am I huh? Ummm...LOL..

Well, I am 24yrs old (next month), and a mommy to 2 girlies ages 8 and 2 (next month...March is a very busy month for us LOL). I have been married for 4 yrs to my hubby Dave. I started the 'real world' early at 16 when my 8 yr old was born. I always knew she had Down syndrome, even before she was born. I had a gut feeling that hit me when I was 3 months pregnant. Any who, I have always looked at Down syndrome differently than most people. I am a firm believer that those with disabilities should never be treated differently. I have never made anything 'easier' for her because of her 'disability'. That includes in school, life in general, or what I expect of her. I home school her and I expect her to do whatever kids her age are working on, even if it take a little more practice (and it usually does, but that is OK.). Anything she is involved in I make sure she is challenged no differently than her peers. Because of this, she has grown up to be completely unaware of any 'disability' she may have and exceeds the expectations of everyone she meets (By the way, she just won 1st place national championship in her cheerleading competition, and we are looking forward to winning 1st place in regionals next weekend ;-). Sorry, had to throw that in because I am soooo proud!). I don’t see raising a child w/ DS/ASD as hard at all. How fun would life be if it had no challenges or excitement. I don’t see DS/aspergers as a challenge, but more of a life experience. I actually consider myself blessed because I have experienced things many people would never have had the opportunity to experience. She has opened my eyes to so much compassion and good in the world that I never knew existed. People ask if I would do anything differently as a teenager, and I say no flipping way. I would never exchange everything I have learned and experienced for a normal teenage life, and risk turning out any differently.

I went to college at 17 for my AA in applied science. I am the type of person who loves to learn, and I ended up 4 yrs later as a neuromuscular therapist, CNA, and a certified doula. I have always been a rock collector and LOVE sparkly things! I didn’t start collecting faceted stones till about a year ago, and became extremely interested in them. Just something about them makes me feel relaxed and happy. There is something so special about something so beautiful and pure being made by nature and god, ya know? I started with tanzanite, and then it sky rocketed from there. I worked in a jewelry store for a few months and realized it’s my passion, and began learning everything I could about stones. I wanted to take it to the next levelel and joined the GIA education and quickly became a AJP, and am now studying to be a G.G. When I get my GG I want to do something exciting with it. I am not sure what that will be yet, but I know the opportunity will present itself when I am ready for it.

I do consider myself to be a little bit of a hippy (In case some haven’t noticed yet LOL). I never used to be this way, but in 06 I had a VERY bad heart problem that I had surgery for in Oct 06. This made me see what is important in life, and helped me realize who I am. I believe things happen for a reason, whether it is to change the path in your physical life or spiritual life. Since my surgery, I have learned to take a deep breath and let life take me where I am supposed to go. Stressing about life will do no more then..well, stress you out. Doesn’t change what happens in the end right? Doing this has helped me get through many hardships, and led me to what I feel is my lifes passion (gemstones).

On a less deep level, my favorite icecream is mint chocolate chip. And my favorite pizza toppings are pineapple and chicken (together). I am a video game player and LOVE the final fantasy series and RPGS (including WoW). I love gardening and camping (I have a small cabin on 2 acres in NY that we visit ALOT) in the summers, and hibernate on the couch in the winter. I am also a horrible speller, so if there are typos or spelling problems in this novel...well that’s just who I am :-P.

I am usually an open book so if I missed anything lemme know! LOL!!!

Well, you are not the best speller in the world but, hey, one of this country''s best cardiac surgeons is certainly not the best reader in the world - talented people are rarely well-rounded.

I must say you are quite mature. Teenage pregnancy is a difficult thing and I have seen many young moms who desperately wanted kids but then struggled with bonding. It seems that you have done very well. It is amazing how you raise your daughter(s). And congratulations on the first place in cheerleading! She must be very happy and proud.

What does your family do for fun?

And tell me about your hubby. How did you meet him, what does he do. What does he think of your passion for colored stones?

For fun in the summers we go to the park, zoo, camping at our cabin, play in the yard and travel. We LOVE to travel. I take the kids to DC every year as a field trip.

I met hubby...dont laugh....on an online video game (asherons call). It was 7 yrs ago and we just kinda ran into each other on it and clicked. He is a high-lo operator (although has been unemployed in this horrible economy for over a year). He acts like he doesnt care about my stones, but he is sooooooo protective of them. I can tell him I want to set one and he kinda freaks out and says "what if it chips, what if what if what if". So I think he enjoys them too but doesnt want to admit it ;-). He is very supportive with my gemstone passion though.

Well, I am so happy for you - you have a supportive an loving family, you are a great mom, and you have a hobby. You do seem a fast learner and a fast thinker (are you also a fast talker?).

It is sad that the economy is so bad but since everything comes in cycles (this is psychiatrist in me talking) I hope that the pendulum will swing to the other side and things get better. Hopefully, soon enough so that you could have more money to set your beautiful stones!

Rockhugger, it was great getting to know you here! You have such an uplifting and encouraging personality which is very refreshing. It sounds like you have a lovely family and are very passionate about your love of gems. A friend of mine just had a son with Downs and she lives by the same motto on life. She stays home with him and is such a great mommy. Thanks for sharing with us!

Rockhugger, I''m really enjoying this thread about you!

SOrry Indy, I havnt checked this in FOREVER hehe.

My favorite gem is the diamond. Colored stone? I really dont know! I dont really have a favorite. I like large stones with lots o'' color.

My paraibas are currently up for sale :-( . We are trying to buy a new house so those may be my down payment. If we can find one we dont need a large DP for, then they will stay in their happy lil'' box for a while till I can find a jeweler to set them in a necklace.
