Is it a really bad idea to buy a preset engagement ring?

YES

Actually, whick "present ring" - Cartier or Ebay "must go" bargain ??? It does make a difference, although both might not be described as "good deal" for different reasons...

What about buying a "used" ring from someone who has a cert./appraisal? Surely there are good rings that people want to sell at a discount for personal reasons divorce, upgrade etc.???

It's all about knowing and getting what you think you are getting. If you are going to buy in this fashion, I would insist on making the sale contingent on getting an independent appraisal yourself.

Most of the time, people say buy the stone and setting separate so that you can control and select the quality, size and price of the stone independent of the setting. If this stone suits your purpose, go for it, but protect yourself.

I think a preset diamond ring is a BAD idea. Mostly preset rings are put together using lower quality diamonds and are sold to consumers who know little about diamonds and are willing to sacrifice quality for a cheaper ring.

Buying a used ring could mean the stone was originally preset, hence the likelihood it's lower quality, or it could have been put together using a loose stone and be okay or great quality (who knows?!). I'd second the idea of an *independant* apprasial before purchasing any premade ring, new or used, so you know you're purchasing a great stone. Be sure to buy from someone with an excellent return policy to protect yourself as well.

(oh, and we bought a preset ring as an eng. ring and didn't realize how bad of quality it was until we left the store. . .we took it back and upgraded it to a GIA cert. loose stone and had it set. The new stone was remarkably better quality

Thanks for all the info, everything you say makes sense...

Reason I am asking is because I would really like to get an antique engagement ring...I am not as concerned with great quality as I am with the style, setting, history... I know that goes against everything I have read here

If this is what you're looking for at least get an independant appraisal of any ring you're interested in to confirm the diamond isn't chipped or damaged and that it's pretty close to the color/clarity that the seller is claiming!

Good luck.

Different story... usually hearing "pre-set" one thinks of what Amazon.com sells labeled with this word. There is always a way to tell that the price is right for whatever piece you like, once and if the question comes to verify.
