Hi everyone

I am looking for someone who may be able to assist in setting an 8ct Aquamarine I have purchased.

I can’t afford a super expensive setting would like to keep it under $700USD

I am in Australia and they conversion against the USD is very poor.

I am wondering if any PS peeps can recommend someone in Australia? Not sure how many fellow Aussies may be on here?

thanks

If it’s a standard size and shape you might be able to buy a cast setting.
having anything “made to measure” here is Australia is expensive. jewellers have much higher overheads here (rent, wages, insurance) than their US counterparts.
whoever you chose, it’s important to see photos of their previous work so as to judge the finesse of the work. not all Jewelers are created equal!
If you just want a standard 4 or 6 claw setting in gold, it shouldn’t cost too much. Once you start adding in side stones, engraving, miligrain, etc the price starts going up fast.
i also have a guy in Sydney who does all my work.

Thanks everyone

I am in Melbourne but happy to ship things to someone who is good at what they do

I have an old ring with a lot of gold (big heavy chunky thing) and a few diamonds I wanted to use as accent stones not sure if adding thIs to a standard size ring would be expensive or not
Waiting for the stone to arrive so I can measure it it is an asscher cut

Do you want a simple setting or something more complex? You should be able to get a simple setting made for that here more complex it will be well over that amount. If you want something cheap look at the list of people that make settings on this list;

Lord of Gem Rings (China) is cheap and O.K to deal with David Klass even with the exchange rate and shipping makes better quality settings usually at better prices or similar prices to here.

I also use Stephen Dibb and a guy in the city in Brisbane but neither are cheap at doing anything and to be honest David I think does nicer much finer work. If I just want something set I regularly by settings from the US and Asia just tell them the measurements in mms of the stone and get a company at Strathpine in QLD that does the setting and resizing for most of the chain stores to set the stone for me if it's inexpensive and a guy that works for Stephen Dibb to set it if it's high end.

I believe @misskittycat recommends this guy and others in Sydney;

Thank you this is so helpful.

What I am after is probably quite basic I had plans to do something more elaborate but I don’t think my budget would allow.

The pics above are along the lines of what I am looking for perhaps a split band or if not something with some simple accent stones either side.

I will jump onto that list of recommended vendors. Does it have places to purchase a setting that a jeweller could then alter slightly if need be? I imagine I would pay a premium to the jeweller as there is not a lot of margin

@Acinom Didn't you find/use a reasonably-priced & talented benchperson in Australia some time back ... Alistair-something, IIRC?

@Pennyc - it depends what you want changed or altered. It would be better to look at that list of Ebay and Etsy vendors and David Klass and get them to make exactly what you want and send them the stone to set or have the stone set here. Getting benches here to set the stone and size the ring up or down isn't difficult but other alterations to the ring might be.....

I follow McKims in Brisbane on Instagram. They do a lot of work using customers old settings to make something new. Their work looks really well done too.

Plenty of excellent Aussie benches but none that I can think of as “cheap”... I ship my stuff to Daniel M (Etsy) in the US and even with currency conversion, it’s been cheaper than local quotes. I would suggest contacting him & discussing what you want.

I agree with @GliderPoss, I'm in Australia also and am actually working with Dan at danielmjewelry in the US on setting a diamond for me. He has created several settings for me now, substantially cheaper than anywhere local. Plus he's delightful!

I am just wondering if anyone can recommend a jeweller in Sydney to resize a platinum and diamond solitaire ring. I think @gregchang35 mentioned that he knew someone. I have checked with the jeweller that @misskittycat has previously recommended, but that business looks as if it is closed. All suggestions would be very welcome.

Thank you @gregchang35 I will look them up. Is Jenny Bay the name of the shop? And have they resized platinum for you? I'm a bit worried cause I've read that it can leave marks, although it sounds as if a laser welder prevents this. I also read one account of a thinner stank after resizing and I don't want that either. Do you know anything about Daniella jewellers in Sydney? They are advertising platinum resizing.

Jenny bay is the name of the shop (level 6 or similar). i have not been to their place. They are on insta, if you have an account.

I have only worked with 18kWG with them. So, i am not sure about platinum.
I do not know much about Daniella Jewellers. if they state they do platinum resizing, then check their reviews? Ask/ tell them that you are concerned about?

Thanks @gregchang35 I asked them all the questions and they seemed confident. But they're on holiday until Monday and I will be leaving Sydney on Saturday. So, I'm back to first base now. So, if anyone knows anyone who's good at working with platinum in Sydney please let me know.

I tried that earlier @gregchang35 and she said it was a specialist area and she was unable to recommend anyone.

@diamondgirl63. It’s odd thst they advertise that they do resizing in platinum but obviously not the type you are looking for.

Hope others will chime in to help you out.

They do it @gregchang35 and it's what I want. But they are not open until next Monday and I will have left Sydney by then.

Oh- I get it now. Sorry, I got mixed up. I thought you spoke to Jenny bay first and they couldn’t do it as they were away, and that is when I suggested to ask Daniella.
but when you responded to that I think you meant to have said you tried Jenny bay.
Quite confusing.

But I get it now.
