My SO and I are about to become engaged. After spending so much time and effort on finding the right diamond, I want to keep it as clean and sparkly as possible once he "officialy" proposes. I use a lot of lotion and produts, so I am guessing it will get dirty quickly. I am considering purchasing an ultrasonic or home steam cleaner. Does anyone recommend one over the other? If so, do you recommend a specific model?

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

You know, I bought a Jewel Jet a few months ago, but I rarely use it. I find that a solution of 1/2 warm water, 1/2 amonia and 1 drop of liquid detergent works better. I let me ring soak for about 5 minutes and then use a soft bristled tooth brush to scrub it with, then dry with a paper towel....

I'd like some suggstions on this as well. I was using hot water with Dawn dish liquid. I think ammonia can wear on the plating on white gold, yes? Anyways, my ring is NEVER as nice as when the jeweler does it. So I'd like to know if I need an ultrasonic or steam cleaner to duplicate the results. And which one is best?

In steam cleaner you have to maintain temperature otherwise it can be damaged. I think before it's use you can take advice from the seller where you buy the ring.

I have a concern about using an ultrasonic on rings with pave. They could be loosened by the ultrasonic cleaning. Perhaps others could chime in on this. So I use just the Sharper Image steamer after using some dawn dishwasher liquid and sometimes a small brush.

I use a lot of hand lotion too and the water here is hard so my rings look bad after a few days of normal wear. For a quick clean up I give them a spritz of windex and wipe with a clean cloth. A couple of times a month I use an ultrasonic cleaner with a mixture of Mr. Clean, distilled water and ammonia. Sometimes I use a commercial cleaner (it comes in a red container and I think they have it at Target & WalMart). I've gone through three or four ultrasonic cleaners over the years. I think the cheap one I'm using now works as well as any of the others. If I have enough time I use the Jewel Jet on the diamonds. (I know some gemstones can't take heat so I never use it on anything else) I like the Jewel Jet a lot!

I hadn't heard about the ammonia being a problem with gold but maybe that's why my white gold needs to be replated so often.

Congratulations on your new ring!

PS - Get a screen or strainer to place over your drain when you clean your jewelry. I've learned a lot more about removing a P trap than I ever thought was possible.

After I read this post I immediatly buy an ultrasonic Sony. Hope It will help to keep my jewels clean and pure!
