Rich,

I have found your postings very helpful in my diamond education, and your informative and advice/assistance you''ve given to other members have been great reading. It is now time that I ask you (and any others that may be able to help) for some guidance. I know you are busy, but hope you can help! I''m considering purchasing a diamond, and want to get a better feel for it. Do you think you could run a DiamCalc for me on the following dimensions:

GIA Cert for Round Brilliant 2004
Weight: 1.04 carat
Color: I
Clarity: VS2
Measures: 6.51 - 6.58 x 3.97 mm
Depth %: 60.7
Table %: 58.0
Pavi Angle: 40.4
Crown Angle: 35.0
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Very Good
Culet: None
Girdle: Medium to Slightly Thick, Faceted
Fluorescence: None

Comments: Crystal, Needle, Feather, Cloud, Extra Facet (near Girdle, on Pavilion very small) no inclussions on table.

When I used the HCA calculator, it scored a 0.7 -I believe that this is good based on the information that I''ve read - but would like to validate with the diamond calculator. The reason is because I am purchasing this diamond unseen and would like to have the best idea before I make my purchase. The store did not know what Hearts and Arrows are nor any good info. of the cut (besides that it is ''round'').

They do offer a 30 day money back guarantee though.

Thank you, and everyone else on the forum, in advance for your time.

Best regards,

Chris

Well, I am not Rich, but will try to answer your question.

First off, congrats! It looks like you've done extensive research, and that's always a huge plus.

Second, looks like you have selected an interesting stone: a fairly steep crown coupled with a shallower pavilion... The result should be very interesting and pleasing, visually speaking, and the excellent HCA score confirms this. It's not an 'ideal' cut by AGS standards (which BTW will change very soon), but a very well proportioned stone nevertheless. The extra facet is not a concern, if it's small and minor. The 'very good' symmetry grade seems to confirm this.

You have selected a very smart color/clarity combo: the I color will face up whiter due to the great make and a VS 2 stone with no inclusions on the table should be really clean even under magnification.

All in all, I think you have selected a very nice stone... May I ask you the price you're being quoted?

Giangi,

Thank you for your kind e-mail.

How and when do you think the AGS will change the ideal cut standard? Do you think there would be any affect on this diamond?

The color/combo was a difficult proposition for me, since I had read so many posts suggesting that one should look for an SI with a better color (i.e. H or higher). The argument being; that one would not be able to tell the difference between the SI and VS, but could see the difference between colors. However, my preference was a purer diamond which is a personal preference (I hope she will understand)

In regards to your question, the price is approx. $5000 (negotiating for setting). How does that price seem?

Hi Chris!

$5000 seems, frankly, quite high to me. I would have expected a quote more in the $3.9-4.4K for a similar stone.

AGS will change their grading tables soon, and it's believed by many that some of those extremely good looking stones that are considered as of now ''off makes'' by AGS standards, may get a better score and vice-versa: some of those steep/deep combos that fall within AGS0 limits may be downgraded.

I said you chose a smart combo because I/VS 2 means very little color and no inclusions. An H/SI 1 or even G/SI 2 may be an equally wise choice, but you'd always have to make sure that inclusions are not visible to the naked eye. Let's say that I/VS is a safer bet! And it's still Tiffany quality!

Hi Lynn,

Thank you! I will post some pictures of the ring, but will also have to figure a way to take some closeup pictures of the diamond itself. I understand that the best way is through a loupe.
