Resizing Conundrum for my only OMBAS find

Hi All, I found a cluster ring at I want to get resized. The ring is a size 5.25 and I need it sized up almost two sizes. It also has a split shank.

The issue is that the ring has a hallmark, assay marks, and an inscription with the jewelers name. The ring is estimated to be 30 years old so vintage, but not antique. I am waiting to hear back from my jeweler, but in the meanwhile what should I sacrifice to make the ring big enough to enjoy?

Aargh-too small!

I feel like a very skilled bench should be able to work around all those marks?? I see a nice size gap in that one photo.

There’s a similar gap on the other side of the shank.

I guess I’m trying the weigh the extra (unknown) cost of resizing versus having the maker’s mark buffed out since the ring is vintage and not antique-assay marks would be preserved.

Is it important to preserve the maker’s name for a vintage ring? There’s a BH engraved on the other side of the shank.

I always see people asking about makers marks when evaluating vintage and antique pieces so it does seem to be something people think about. If its missing someone in the future might wonder.

I would think the metal purity could potentially be added back by the bench after sizing?

It’s very hard to see but the metal purity is in the assay marks-they are teeny tiny. I couldn’t see them clearly even with a coin microscope.

Agree with Dreamer. If you want to preserve the maker's mark, it should definitely be doable, especially with a laser welder. I was just watching a repair video the other day and the ring had like 4 different resizing cuts in the band. All to say, anything is possible with a trustworthy jeweler.

No harm in looking into things! I feel like it’s worth a little extra to preserve the marks especially for resale in the future. It just makes a piece seem more complete and well cared for.

It would also be an epic pinky ring!

I'm so bad at wearing pinky rings-I already have three that don't get much love :geek2:

Excellent points!

Resize done and all markings intact 8-)
