Hi everyone, I just need some advice on resizing an 18ct white gold engagement ring, narrow, flat shank with under rail, 4 claw setting, from a size N to a size J (6 3/4 to a 4 3/4). Is this possible? I'm worried about the diamonds on the arm popping out or becoming unstable. Thanks for your help!

Is this a ring you already have or are considering purchasing.

We were thinking about buying this ring from an Auction site (It has all the relevant documentation) But I was just worried about a resizing issue. Makes it hard when you can't speak to the Jeweller though!

But you could print the photo and take it to a jeweller or email it to a jeweller and ask their opinion. It would be better to have the ring in hand, but they may be able to tell you something from looking at the photos.

Sizing a ring down with side diamonds more than 3 sizes is a bit dicey, you would definitely need to ask a jeweller. The jeweller I used to work for wouldn't size rings with channel side diamonds down that far, but the pic you posted looks to have bead/grain set sides, so you might be able to just manage it.

With effort nearly anything can be sized but the issue here is going to have to do with the original craftsmanship. Given that it's a closeout being auctioned off anonymously, I wouldn't assume it'll be fabulous so yes, I think it's a risk for trouble.

Just out of curiosity, when you say you have all of the relevant documentation, may I ask what docs does that include?

Re: Resize a N size 18ct white gold engagement ring to a J??

Hi denverappraiser the documentation is comes with is a Valuation by the Australian Association of Jewellery Valuers (AAJV) and a GIA certificate. I have had a similar ring resized from an M to a J and even it ended up a bit oblong in shape (not as round as it was before the resizing). I'm going to try and get to a Jeweller after work today, but think I'll be pushing it too much to go that extra size. Damn these tiny fingers! Thanks for the help anyway, its greatly appreciated :D

The problem is that what you've got there is a computer generated image, not a photograph. Mind you, even if it were a photograph, it probably wouldn't be of your ring but rather a model that's similar to yours. The GIA just talks about the center stone. The appraiser might be able to tell you if they did a thorough inspection but given that YOU weren't the client, I think it's unlikely. That leaves to guess based on the model. Yes, it could be sized by taking out a little bit from the bridge on each side of the center stone and then doing the sizing at the bottom center. Will that work in practice? Maybe, maybe not. It depends on the craftsmanship of that bridge. That's why you need someone to look at the actual ring rather than just the image above.

how much is this ring?

thanks denverappraiser, I had a feeling I was pushing my luck. I might wait till I find something that's a little less of a dilemma :| . Hi Niel, so far its up to $1000 AUD inc the buyer premium.
