Resetting an heirloom stone - ring or pendant?

I recently inherited a diamond ring from my grandmother. I don't like the setting, so I plan to re-set it, but I'm not sure exactly what I want to do yet. It's a pear-shaped stone, about 1.5 ct/I/SI2. I was thinking either a ring or a pendant. I have been thinking about it for a while and am still stumped - any votes, ideas, or experiences to share?

Thanks!

Welcome to PS Chava23! I have no experience to share, but that is a lovely sized pear stone. Are you more likely to wear a ring everyday or a pendant? *IS* it something you want for daily wear or special occasions? Do you prefer all diamonds or coloured stones too?

Very exciting dilemma on your hands (ha! pun intended!!) and you will find lots of inspiration in the show me your pears thread. (can't find it at the moment... apologies for not being more helpful and providing link. :(sad )

Pendant, IMO if the SI2 has any risk factors for chipping or fracturing.

Oh it's not a terribly damaged stone - the guy that looked at it just labeled it as SI2 b/c the inclusion was pretty obvious on the face of the stone. So I don't think that's the issue.

And thanks Enerchi

To answer your questions, I think I'm more likely to wear a ring every day than a necklace, b/c I like to change up the necklace I'm wearing depending on my outfit. The thing is though, that I'm not sure if I want to wear it on a daily basis or just for special occasions - I guess that's my real dilemma. It's a pretty fancy stone, and I go to school in a bad area so I don't think I'd be wearing it to school for sure. I personally am a fan of colored stones over diamonds (my e-ring is a pink sapphire) - either way though, I don't want to add any other stones.

A pear is such a nice shape for a pendant, I think.

I'd love to see the ring in it's current setting. Of course I would then have to talk you out of resetting the diamond if it's in it's original antique setting....lol. I always vote for a ring. I'm with Chava in that I like to change up my necklaces depending on what I'm wearing.

Why not a pendant with a pink sapphire halo? I think it would be beautiful, and would be a great dress up piece for you.

Okay, looks like you have a really young grandma or else she reset that diamond or purchased it new in the 1980's....lol. I'd reset it for sure. Did you find the show me your pears thread? That thread had all kinds of setting ideas.

I'm not sure exactly when it was purchased - I'd have to ask my grandfather. But it's true, I don't think it's a very old ring. I did check out the show me your pears thread. I got a few nice ideas from it. Still not sold on any particular idea so far. I'd ask my fiance, but it's such a personal thing, and I wouldn't want him to get offended if I didn't like his ideas.

Beautiful FAT pear-- I LOVE fat pears. That one would look amazing as a ring or a pendant. I'm still do a pendant personally, but a ring would be lovely was well.

I am starting to lean toward a pendant. I feel like a ring might be too flashy, and I have very small hands which adds to that concern.

It doesn't look too big on your hand. If that's your hand in the pics. Not helping-- I know. But since you don't have a diamond ring-- IF YOU WANT ONE-- this is the perfect opportunity for one. Do you LIKE the pear... will you want to stare at it on your finger. If I really loved the stone I'd want to view it all the time.

That is true. Oh man, this is too hard. :P I'll have to think it over more tomorrow. I'm heading to bed. Thanks for all the input everyone!

I vote pendant because pears make such lovely pendants (I have one myself)!

Chava, in my earlier post I forgot to say how beauuuutufl the pear diamond is--you'll have to excuse me for that I put in a long day of work yesterday and I was tired and not thinking properly.

I agree with Gypsy I love fat pears. And it really does look like a nice size on your finger. I once tried on a 2 carat diamond and I thought it looked ridiculously huge on me. I ended up with a 1.5 then suddenly it started "looking" like it was a lot smaller after I got used to it--then I wished I would have gotten the 2 carat! Wear the ring around for a while and I bet the same thing happens to you....you'll get used to it and then it won't seem so big. :)
