I purchased a diamond late last year to be used for an engagement, but haven't yet proposed and haven't yet set it. I'm now wanting to go bigger.

Obviously, I'd like to sell as soon as possible, while also taking as little of a loss as possible. Return period w/ the vendor is already up, and they'll only buy back for a significant loss, despite the diamond never leaving its packaging except to be ogled at.

My options are
1) sell on PS "preloved" or list on LT. I'm hoping someone would pay for as little of a loss this route because it'd be slightly discounted off
2) sit on it for a few years, waiting for prices to go up, and sell it then for a much smaller loss/maybe even a slight gain. While I'd prefer that money to be growing in a retirement fund, it isn't a huge issue to let it just hang out for a little bit until market diamond prices have risen.
3) Keep the diamond I have and get a bomb setting. It's an approx .85 ct "superideal" from a PS vendor.

Looking for advice on how to proceed.

You can probably get about 80% of what you paid for it if you list it. In fact, I'm pretty sure of that. ;)

Does the vendor not have a buy-back policy? I believe many of the PS vendors will let you trade up your stone.

Out of curiosity why are you considering going bigger, and by how much are we talking here?
My 2 cents is that here on PS there a lot of boulders being flashed around and can make an average joe feel insecure! Haha

If the diamond already rocks and you are only thing of going up to a 1ct or just over, just stick with it. Beautiful stone + beautiful setting can look like a 1ct easily. I did a 0.92ct and even side by with many 1ct it looks the same if not bigger. On its own in a relatively simple setting it looks big to me.

My gut it its not worth it unless you are going for >1.2ct, but lets see whats other ppl say. I can't comment on resale otherwise.

I'm wanting to open up to other vendors at this point. Financially I'm able to increase my budget comfortably. I hope to go to 1.2, which is visibly larger.

There's a thread in Pre-Loved that might interest you. ::)

Did you not buy from a vendor with an upgrade (trade-in) policy? That is the only way you are not going to lose money.

Please don't take this the wrong way but is 1.2 that much larger such that it would be worth losing money on selling it preloved now? If you are doing well financially why don't you save up for another 2-3 years (or however long) to double the amount you spent and do a significant upgrade without losing money now? You're still not giving it to her yet now anyway. I am assuming you went with a vendor that has a 2x spent upgrade policy.

I personally would not be prepared to take a loss on the diamond at this point. I would consider setting options such as halo, 3 stone dependant on if you know your girl would like these types of setting. If not put it in a simply setting and wait a few years, then decide on things. Good luck with it all.

Thank you all for the frank advice.

Here is a the size difference I'm looking at (I've made everything as accurate as possible--6.15 diam vs 6.9 diam): screen_shot_2014-05-18_at_12.png

If I keep my current diamond, I'm probably going to go w/ the Mark Morrell Torchiere.
If I get a new diamond, I'll likely get a cheaper setting.

The price difference between these two options (before any loses on selling my current diamond) is approx $1000. Quite a big upgrade for little money. I'm not in a huge rush to offload the diamond as my money situation is okay, but the thought of taking a loss is somewhat agonizing. After seeing the size difference and knowing some more financials, does it change any minds? Definitely needing more advice!

Well, there is obviously a size difference in the two stones and your SO is lucky to have someone willing to go bigger! Now you alluded to wanting to go to another vendor. Are you 100% set on this? If so, you could always list the diamond (in PS Preloved and DB/LT) and see if you get any bites at a price you can live with. No harm, no foul, right?

You can trade in with same vendor and retain 100% of old diamond value. That's the best route in this case.

If money isn't a problem what about having this stone set as a pendant? She could even wear it on your wedding day. It would make a lovely pendant. Just a thought.

I would go bigger if the finances allow - there is definitely a size difference :wavey:

If you're not in a huge rush then check back in with your sales rep and let them know you'd like to upgrade to the 1.2ct size and ask that they let you know as soon as they get something in that fits your requirements... a lot of times they know what is coming down through the pike, well before it will ever show up on the website. And if nothing suitable is in the works, they may be able to find the proper rough and have it cut for you so to speak.

I agree it is visibly larger. I started with a 1.21. I wanted a 1.5 but because primarily I wanted excellence in cut, I had to give up something and I don't regret it for a moment. I compared .98, 1.1s and 1.2s when I was shopping around and the 1.2 range gave me the size I was aiming for while still allowing me to afford high color and clarity.

I like the idea of making it into a pendant, designed by you. That would be an amazingly thoughtful wedding day present she will treasure forever, and that way you lose nothing. If the day comes when you run across an awesome deal where you can trade it in for an upgrade without losing anything, she'll likely be even more thrilled.

Are you going down in color and clarity a lot or something? Because I am not seeing how a 1.2 ct stone is only $1000 more than one that was around .85 cts???

OP, the visual difference is definitely significant; I like the way the 1.2 looks in your pix, of course this will also depend on her finger size somewhat. That said I am also very surprised that the difference in price is 1000, I am also wondering if what you are looking at and thinking that perhaps it is a great value is in fact not. Perhaps you should direct all the nice people assisting you here to the stone you are considering now. I also love the idea of setting the stone you already have in a pendant, that would be a lovely gift. You can actually sit on it past your wedding day and gift her with it on her birthday, anniversary, etc.

I like Sandy's idea of setting this stone as a pendant, alternatively, have you considered a halo setting? That would really increase the visual size of the diamond and not cost the earth. A good friend has a similar size diamond in a halo setting and it makes the stone look quite substantial on her finger.

Possibly going 1 down in color and 1 down in clarity. The diamond price difference is only approx 2K, but I'd be getting a cheaper setting with the bigger diamond.

Contact the vendor and really hassle them, some have great buy back trade up policies others do not, but it doesn't hurt to ask if they want your return business. There are also always people looking for SuperIdeals for rings and others for projects like earrings on here ALL the time, so if you really do want to sell it try listing it on Loupetroop because it is free and you will be able to gauge what sort of offers and the real amount you are likely to get for it. Then only you can tell if you are happy with that and are willing to sell for the market price so to speak or if not then hang on to it and make it into a pendant, keep it and halo it and make it a right hand ring or a three stone with coloured sides as a right hand ring or save it for some time in the future for a pair of earrings.

You save the ideal cut .85 and match it down the road for studs. As every woman needs an ideal cut pair of studs

I will +1, this idea, but I am thinking he wants to put the money towards the new stone!
