Hi all,

I am so thankful I found this site. The thoughts, ideas and informative content is truly amazing. The only problem may be there is so much of it, it becomes difficult for a novice to to wade through it all.

I am currently researching diamonds for an engagement ring. In an ideal world, I would like to replicate the Tiffany Legacy ring. Clearly, this is based on my budgetary constraints ($6,000).

Now to the questions:

Main: While I have read the Legacy stone is some sort of hybrid between a cushion and an Asscher, I am focusing on cushions. I had no idea the complexity involved with cushion cuts and would appreciate advice regarding the specific types (brilliant, modified brilliant, antique, old mine - I doubt I got that 100% accurate). Although I suspect this will largely depend on my personal taste when viewing the diamond.

From what I understand, the "recommended" ranges are 54-62 % table and 59-64% depth. (source: https://www.pricescope.com/wiki/diamonds/cushion-cut-diamond

I am thinking I will be somewhere in the G-I color and SI1-VS2 clarity. Any recommendations on cut?

Halo/Melee: From what I understand, I will purchase the melee from the ring designer. If this is correct, my questions really come down to price. In order to estimate how much I can spend on the main, I need to have an idea of how much the melee and designing of the ring will cost. So, I feel like I am unable to really make decisions because I don't know where to start!

Mounting Style: Really need some help here. I understand pave is what I would want to have the melee on the the sides of the ring; however, I doubt that will work with my budget. So, does a pave mounting include a halo only setting? If so, is this best taken care with the designer?

Any ideas where to start or any other advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the links petrock<3!

generally you don't purchase the melee, you would order a pave setting (like the one petrock posted). as far as cushions there are many types as you are aware so I would first start by narrowing down the type you like. here is a good educational video on cushion cuts and different styles

Wow, so this really is a replica! http://www.exceldiamonds.com/-Engagement-Rings-5/Diamond-Accent-Engagement-Rings-12/Tiffany-Inspired-Legacy-Engagement-Ring-Replica-With-Mill-Grain-Edge--1544.html

When I originally asked this question, I was thinking I would find something close, but not exact. So, this question may seem strange, but is the setting in the link above, how do I say this, cheesy or tacky for being such a close replica? I hope this question doesn't come off bad, I really just don't know and dont want my GF to be wearing a "folex" if you know what I mean.

Secondly, although I prefer to buy almost anything possible online, I think I want to buy the actual diamond in person. Say I buy the setting in the link above and buy a diamond separate. Is there typically a substantial cost to have the ring put together?

Finally, I assume Excel Diamonds is a trusted name, is there anything I should be aware of if/when I purchase through them?

Someone on another forum I read said that the closest diamond cut out now that comes close to the legacy is the crisscut cushion or crisscut asscher. I did go to their website and it is really close. I think if I ever buy another diamond I might have to obtain one of those.

Ring Admirer: "Wow! Your ring is beautiful! Is it really from Tiffany &Co.?"
Your Girlfriend: "Actually, my fiancé had it custom made for me. I really like the style of the Tiffany one, but this was made so that it would be just right for us. Isn't my fiancé just amazing!"

haha, thank you! That answer puts it into perspective!

From what I hear, crisscuts are pretty pricey... never personally looked into it though.
And just as an FYI- if you are looking in the 1ct and under range, I think an asscher looks more like the Legacy cut than cushions do. In fact, mine was mistaken for an asscher at distance by another jeweler once until she got a closer look at it.
As for the "cheesiness" of doing a replica? Only your lady can tell you that. While I don't think it's "cheesy", I personally was not comfortable with the idea of getting a replica. So if I couldn't have the original, I'd rather have a completely different halo-style ring like Leon's Cold Fusion (also very expensive from what I hear), which could never be mistaken for a Legacy. Maybe the Ritani Endless Love ring are in your price range??
Also may I suggest looking into getting her a genuine antique/vintage halo engagement ring (you know, what the Legacy was based on)?? There's so many great sites... I love Dover, JbEG to name a couple... you can get a lot for your money in antique pieces!

An "estate" Tiffany Legacy might be another option...depends on how you guys feel about a used e-ring.

Personally, I wouldn't spend the $$$ on a new Tiffany piece, but I might consider a pre-owned one...loads of people would disagree though, and all that matters is how the two of you feel about it.

There was a recent posting on Brian Gavin's blog where a customer had their halo engagement ring custom-fit for a cushion and it was totally stunning - I think it's a fabulous Tiffany replica and would love to eventually have mine set that way! I don't think it's cheesy at all. Why pay a bunch more when you could have something custom instead?

If you look back on their blog, it was posted on 11 October.

I was looking at http://Www.markbroumand.com (for myself) and saw some nice looking rings that are very similar to the Legacy.

They were above your price range but also had larger centers than you have been looking at. He does custom work, and with the prices he was showing you might be able to get something very nice from him well within your range.

The mount you purchase will need to be fitted for the diamond you choose. This requires exactitude. Approximates don't work.
Buy both items from the same dealer or you'll be wasting money on expensive modifications and the results may not be as pleasing as they would be if the stone and mount were mated prior to having all of the pave' and finishing work done.
