Hi everyone, I just wanted to follow up my previous post asking for suggestions to share some reviews. We decided on Rehoboth beach,DE basically by throwing a dart at a map (in our minds!) Middle of the week was an awesome time to go, as there was ample parking and no more than a 20min wait for dinner. We stayed in a little B&B called The Royal Rose which was barely a block and a half from the beach. It wasn''t luxe, but it was extremely clean and charming. Extras they provided us with: beach chairs, beach towels, ice coolers, ice, lemonade. And of course breakfast. It was competitively priced, and if we could have stayed longer we would have. Alas, when you call places from the road before labor day weekend, chances are they are booked through the weekend.
There was tons of great seafood around, and that was all we ate for three days. The place had a friendly family vibe while clearly being a more liberal and gay friendly beach. Who knew there was a distinction? The shopping in town was cheesy and repetitive but fun for brief browsing. The beach was the cleanest I''ve seen in America. The water was warm! Yay. Around 75 degrees but the waves and rip tide were huge. Basically, we never went deeper than the middle of our shins, and still managed to get soaked head to toe. Technically, there were no swimming flags, but as far as we could tell, everyone was in the water anyway, just no more than a few feet from the shore. Lifeguards still on duty.
The boardwalk arcade closed much earlier than we expected. We went by around 10pm and everything was dark. I was hoping for an evening ride through the old-school haunted house.
We drove over to Lewes, it was very charming, sleepy looking town. It seemed that it wasn''t quite the park-the-car-and-forget-it place that Rehoboth was. Also, as far as we could tell the biggest attraction was leaving? (The cape may ferry to NJ). We did get roped into the life-saving station, not much to see, though there is a boat to explore and a very very enthusiastic historian guide. The public access beach front in Lewes was teeny tiny in comparison to Rehoboth, and seemed to be a much more locals scene.
We also toured the Dogfish Head Brewery. Also not much to see, but lots to listen to about how they make their beer and give back to the environment. PLUS we got to sample 4 beers.
