So I took my new Regent to a local custom jeweler (who had very good local feedback and has been in business for 32+ yrs) to be set in a temporary white gold solitaire and things went awry. I say temporary b/c I plan to pick the perfect setting WITH my gf. Anyway, before I took it to him, I talked to him over the phone and he said he was familiar with the shape. So I figured I didn''t need to make sure he knew how to set it correctly...wrong!!! He put the 4 prongs on the SIDES of the Regent instead of the corners AND he didn''t even manage to do that symmetrically...it''s skewed!!! I would post pics, but I''m too embarrassed. The only reason I went to him in the first place is b/c he has produced some good custom work, and he said the price of the white gold solitaire could be put toward the cost of the platinum custom piece I had in mind. Well now that''s wasted b/c I''m not going to trust a custom piece from him...I wish I had gotten a simple white gold setting from GOG. Hindsight is 20/20 and all that, right?
Oh well.
ANYWAY, I was wondering if anyone had a link to a diagram for jewelers showing how to set a Regent. I know I saw one somewhere (here or GOG) when I was in the buying process, but now I can''t find it! It was a just a simple overhead drawing. Thanks for any help.
I''m going to go back tomorrow and try to explain to him how to set it. Any suggestions on how to describe it? Here is what he told me (as best as I can remember) when I picked up the ring and asked about how he set it: "It''s the only way to set that shape. You can''t do it on the rounded corners b/c the stone could slip sideways and fall out." What a load of BS, right!? Of course, I was in a hurry to get to work and didn''t have time to look closely enough. Big mistake! I just hope he is receptive when I return to ask him to try again.
