I noticed how quick you found that stone for Gemgaga. :appl:

You're just very helpful, Treenbean.

Nice Zambian amethyst in there too. The red stones look veeery nice.

Daaaaang that looks hot. And a pretty good deal!

it's the perfect red! If it were a wee bit bigger I'd be all over it. thanks for posting!

It's definitely on the orange side of red. Good price.

I think I like orangey reds over purply or pinky... But then again, I like golden yellow chrysoberyls and weird fleshy browny "padparaschas," so I like things warm... and probably don't have the greatest sensitivity toward color.

I love that color red

Looks like somebody got it! Lucky one!

Both spinels are already sold with the smaller of the two to be the nicer one. Although orangish red, they are nicely saturated.

Does anybody have the secret decoder ring for this line in the description:

GIA color: oR (2) 5/6

Can somebody provide a link to a chart somewhere for the GIA colors?

I'm kind of partial to the bicolor opposed bar tourm, I think that's pretty cool . . .

Oange-Red with medium tone and vivid saturation. The 5 stands for medium tone, and the 6 stands for vivid saturation. Red is the primary hue and orange is the secondary hue since the O is lower case, and the R is uppercase.

I'm on the lookout for a red spinel so I will definitely keep an eye on this thread as well!

I bought the bigger of the two last week. Haven't seen it in person yet as the package is still at the mail center.

I agree that the smaller one has nicer color but I couldn't figure out what to do with a stone of that size, so I went with the other. Hopefully it looks nice in person too; I've yet to be disappointed by any stone of Rick's, so I have my hopes up.

OMG! That is such a beautiful Stone! Good choice, can't wait to see pics! :appl:

:wavey: :wavey: HERE'S another red stone: http://www.litnon.com/index.php?page=viewgem&id=8529

I guess for the price, the Litnon stone is decent as long as one doesn’t expect an eye popping bright red stone. It seems rather dark (only red flash) with a strong brown modifier.

This chart is really helpful! One question since I'm not too savvy when it comes to color. What's the difference between purple and violet? I always thought they were the same, but violet just sounds prettier.

Violet is supposedly a lighter shade of purple (which is the darker shade). Violet is a spectral colour and purple is made when red is added to violet.

I found this on the Art Cut site, so I guess this is another decoder with the same info Chrono posted

Well, I finally got the Art Cut Gems red spinel from the post office last night (it's this one. It'd been languishing in the package room for almost two weeks before I could get down there.

Aaaaand... I think I like it, but I'm going to have to carry it around for a couple of days to make sure. I love it in some lighting and not so much in others. It's definitely a native cut and not a precision cut, which kinda bugs me sometimes. I get the half-and-half effect sometimes, and a bowtie streak down the middle other times, and those moments are :knockout: -- but then in other lighting it just sparkles like crazy and blazes a pure pretty red and I love it, so I don't know quite what to think.

It's not a bad native cut but I really wish this stone had fallen into the hands of a precision cutter instead.

Well, you can have it recut by Jerry at Gemart, but not if you don't like it. Will Rick still let you return it this late?

I had that "weird in different lights" issue with another stone, so I carried a couple of other gems with me. I realized, that in some lights, they ALL looked pretty awful. So I decided I liked the stone and kept it.

I've only seen spinels in fabulous jewelry store lighting; do you have other spinels? How are they in different light? Is this one worse than usual?

:wavey: Maybe someone can tell me what to expect with spinels in different lighting, since I don't know. :wavey:

:wavey: :wavey: HERE'S ANOTHER ONE:

I'm not sure, but I think it's from tonight's Barry update (I don't think they do daylight savings in Arizona, so please reset your timers  ) or it could be from last week:

"GA-6770 Malaya Garnet(J) 1.97 cts., 7.4mm round brilliant[Gec]. This garnet from Tanzania looked very ususual in the rough and I had to have it. It has a slightly orangish pink/red color under incandescent light which shifts to a more orangish pink/red in natural. It has an unusual refractory index of 1.764 and seems fairly heavy for its diameter. Interesting stone! "

I'm not sure I've ever seen a red that was both orangish and pinkish . . .

Sounds sparkly, too! :appl:

Oh, I'm not going to recut it; the cutting isn't that bad, and it's not worth the loss to have it redone. Besides, I was just carrying it around in indirect sunlight and all of a sudden it was the most intense pure glowing red, like what rubies should be, and my heart seized with joy all.

Too bad it doesn't look like that ALL the time. Even so, when it feels like being pretty, this is a hell of a gorgeous stone. It just also happens to be a weirdly moody one.

I have a fair number of other spinels but no other decent reds (I have a crap pair from Gemselect that look like cheapie garnets, which don't count) and no rovals. Most of mine are blues and violets, and they do show different personalities in different lights, but not like this. I think it's a cutting issue but I don't really have the expertise to tell for sure; I'll ask my local jeweler what he thinks next time I stop in.

How is the bubblegum ring going? :wavey:

Liane,
How many days left do you have remaining for the inspection period? Is the price and colour (when it is good) sufficient for you to overlook the not so nice parts? The half and half extinction together with the bowtie is a cut issue. If it changes colour on you though, it is the material itself. Most red spinels show either a garnety colour or turns muddy/brownish or orangish when viewed under fluorescent lighting. Also, some red spinels (even with the most amazing ruby red colour) can end up with a significant amount of extinction under poor lighting which I’ve seen myself. I’ve heard that this is partially due to the tone (a bit on the dark side) and over saturation.

iLander,
That Malaya looks well priced for the budget conscious when one takes into consideration the size. What Barry is saying is that the stone is basically red/pink with an orange modifier. When a red coloured stone is light toned or “watered down”, red becomes pink. Therefore, this stone is sometimes red and sometimes pink. The orange is also always there but its strength will vary depending on the lighting.
