I was playing around with the camera tonight and thought I would try and take some pictures to try to capture a pic of fluoresence in one of my red spinels. This first pic is with just the flash.

This pic is with flash plus UV light.

The llast one is UV only.

As you can see. The stone shows pretty strong fluorescence.

It looks like a juicy watermelon.

Yay fun! Those are some cool pics! What are you planning to do with the stone?

Those are awsome pictures. Are you taking the photo''s in a light box setting? My husband use to do photography (sports and weddings) and he''s interested in building one just for the heck of it.

Is that a Burmese stone?

I love the color of that stone! It''s such a rich, fuchsia-ish tone! Gorgeous!!

CMV:

That''s a gorgeous spinel and I love your pictures, especiallly the ones taken under UV. Did you use some sort of light box to take these pictures? Do you know who sells an inexpensive UV light for gem testing purpose?

AN

Thank you all for the kind coments. Like many I also consider my favorite. Being SR the colors just look so much more pure.

MZ, not sure exactly how long ago I bought this one. I have had it at least four years.

geckodani, at this time I have no plans for this spinel. That is of course excluding my plan to admire it at regular intervals.

mochi & Art Nouveau, Light box? Whats that? Just joking. No light box. These latest pictures were takev using the flash from my camera and a small LED UV light. AN I was given this LED UV light at a recent gem show from a vendor I bought some stones from. They were selling for around 15 dollars. I have looked at the light for the name of the maker but can find no name or info. Sorry.

I recently received a nice tripod and an assorment of lights so I am hoping to post some better pictures soon.

CMW:

A small LED UV light sounds like a cool gadget to have to test color gems. Is it short wave or long wave or both? I will try to look for one. Otto Frei in downtown San Francisco which sells jewelry supplies and equipment may carry it. It would be fun to see what my Tanzania spinels look like under UV light.

Thanks Harriet for the link. I''ll take a look there.

I photographed a few more spinels in UV light.

Wow! What a great collection! Do you have a favorite stone? How long have you been collecting red spinels? It''s probably better than investing in the stock market.

AN

Thanks AN, I have been collecting about 12 years. As for the stock market, you are most likely right . While I can not suggest buying stones in place of careful investing.

About my favs. That is a tough question and will take a little explaining about what I look for in a stone. I find the 2 in the top row my favs. Not because they are my favorite colors but because I find stones in the lightest tones with the strongest saturation the most rare and attractive to me. Those 2 are out of this world !

May I have the ones you don''t want?

Sure thing Harriet, the only problem is I have yet to put ANY into the don''t want catagory LOL

I can see why.
