hey everyone, I beginning to look at engagement rings. rect mod brill cut is a princess cut? thanks

Well, yes and no. Princess cuts are generally supposed to be SQUARE, but some people actually like them rectangular. By the cut, it should show up on GIA certs (maybe others, I don't know) as a Square Modified Brilliant cut, or in your case Rectangular Modified Brilliant cut.

Note that this is a general description, as a Radiant (very different from a princess) is considered a Square/Rectangular Cut-Cornered Modified Brilliant cut as well, but it has CUT CORNERS.

So if you can let us know what you are hoping to get (color, clarity and price range), maybe we can help you out. I know a few posters here have been doing some serious searches for well cut princess stones, so they can be a good resource.

Welcome to PS, and let us know how we can help!

Nicrez hit the nail on the head! Wouldn't it be nice if the labs used a description for these puppies that the public could understand? Of course with all of the minor variations in the faceting patterns of the fancies, maybe that would be too much of a challenge. We still get a kick out of something that the inventor of the Radiant Cut Diamond told us one day which was "the only reason to cut a princess cut diamond is if there is nothing else that you can do with the rough!" which in many cases "seems" to be an accurate statement since so many of the princess cut diamonds that we see in the market look like they were cut from scrap, cut for weight and lack any luster at all... But every once in awhile we see one that is to die for and we have to challenge Henry's statement

thanks for the reply, So this is a Radiant because it has cut corners. Are radiants any less expensive or popular than princess. The cut corners and rectangular shape is what makes it a radiant.

Cut corners are one of the distinguishing factors between a princess cut and a radiant, so yes, it is probably a radiant cut stone... Prices run about the same for the two variances.

thanks again

I know this is not making things easier, but it could you save some...

There is more to the "Radiant" and "Princess" cuts than the corners, as you can see. The facet pattern is difference and both have some branded versions for reference. Anyway, neither kind is consistently cheaper (say the 'average princess' being more or less expensive than the 'average radiant'). However, both thypes have some standards for the cut proportions, and whatever errs from them gets lower prices per carat - on average!

For the respective reference specs you might want to look down this LINK

Also, if you care to put in a post what you are looking for, there will be some better help, I would bet

Thanks Ana! I always try to explain that as best I can, but nothing ever says it like a picture, and that was just perfect!

Radiants that are branded (cut by Henry Gorssbard) will run higher than a generically cut radiant, and this has to do with the stricter standards for cut that The Radiant Cut has for the stones, versus the marketplace that sells generic radiants.

As you'll see princess stones tend to have a concentric star pattern that gives their facets a tringular sort of shape, whereas a radiant will look like little cracked glass sparkles in the center. Finding a princess with cut corners, OR a radiant with corners in tact is difficult, but perhaps DiamondsByLauren will have them, as he did have the pictures!

Good luck!
