OK so I got my stone today for approval. It is beautiful, although it has a feather off the table at about 10 o clock, depending how you hold it, and I can''t see it unless I use a magnifying glass. But it looks small to me-dare I say that. For 3 carats, I thought it would be larger. It measures 9.12x 9.19x 5.64.....

Gail,

Congratulations, and good wishes.

Re the size, though I have no personal idea, according to this chart...and based on some reference to an average or ideal set of proportions, 2.8 carats might map closely, but surely you''re in the right territory, based on that being a 3 carat round.

Here is a carat to mm size chart for you Gail https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/mm-to-carat-stone-conversion-chart.17578/

Diamonds often look larger once set, maybe you had a preconceived idea as to how large it could be, rather than how large it is? Also finger size and hand size can make a difference, we have some pics in SMTR of 3 caraters on ladies with small fingers that look monstrous! I don''t know what to say really, maybe you might be better going larger if that is an option, but generally the larger you go you need to up the carat weight considerably to see a difference. Maybe DeeJay might chime in if she sees this thread, and give you her thoughts as she was looking for a larger diamond.

Halo?

Gosh I had to read that twice before I got what you were saying. LOL I thought you meant that the feather was small! That''s a good thing! LOL

What size is your finger? And stones do look larger once they are set.

Gail,

I have a 3.02 carat stone and it measures 9.23x9.28x5.79 and mine is a tiny bit on the deeper side (but still beautifully cut and sparkling like crazy!

). I have seen measurements like yours on 3 caraters when i) the girdle is overly thick, ii) the stone is cut very steep. Perhaps you can let us have the stats? If it is either one of these causes, perhaps you should rethink the stone. I have compared mine with other stones which are only 0.10mm-0.15mm larger and I can definitely see the difference in size (both loose and mounted). It does look larger once mounted but why pay for the extra weight when you can''t see the difference in size? Most well-cut stones should be around 9.30mm in diameter or thereabout.

Incidentally, I am intrigued by your feather. Mine also has a feather and I was a bit concerned abt it affecting the stability/ integrity of the stone. Is it possible to see the cert?

Thanks for the feedback! The feather is actually not that small, but I guess if I can''t see it...... It is an SI2, so that is to be expected. We also paid what I think is a pretty good price thru WF. I LOVE the halo''s but people are telling me it will look like a headlight on my hand. I tend to disagree! I have looked thru the 3 carat thread and am having a hard time figuring out what to do with my setting. There are some halo''s there I know with larger stones that I thought looked great.

I have posted here before about working with Maytal or Leon.. My finger size is a 6 1/2 or so (depending on the bloat factor that day.... ha ha). What I really can''t tell from Leon''s website is how large some of the solitaires are on a finger. It''s really hard here in Mpls too, the settings that are available to look at are so average and nothing special.

Do you think that a few millimeters makes that much difference in a stone? Especially once it''s in a setting.

Gail, when you get into the larger diamonds, parts of a MM will be less noticeable than with comparing smaller diamonds. That said, it depends on the individual perception of size, some may well be able to notice a difference, some say .5 of a MM and up is noticeable. As to the integrity of the diamond and the feather, I wouldn't worry too much as Bob recommended this stone - WF aren't going to sell diamonds with durability issues, but of course you could get an appraisal if you wished. It sounds like you did well to find a clean SI2 in that size, the halo is a consideration if you like the look, but if you don't feel this diamond is the one for whatever reason then don't settle. I know larger diamonds are in short supply, but you want to get it right even if it means waiting for a while. If this diamond doesn't make your heart sing, then perhaps you need to look again...

Only if it matters to YOU. If it matters to YOU then it is an issue.

Ditto! only you can decide what matters to you and whether you can accept the size as it is (and/ or feather).

As for the halo setting, I totally "dig" that, even at this size.

. I''d love to have that setting but DH has adamantly told me not to.

first of all they''re fractions of millimeters LOL and yes they count.. but more than that, if the stone is facing up small it might not have the most ideal cut and THAT will be the biggest factor IMO in deciding to keep it. You sound disappointed... don''t spend all that $$ on a stone you''re not jumping the moon for!!

Gail, I'm about to halo my 3.37. The only question remianing is whether I can also work some side stones into the design as well (at some point I'm going to run out of finger

I just read the whole celebrity bling thread. There''s a lot of pics there of BIG stones with halos and I think they look wonderful! If you have someone like Maytal or Leon do it there''s no way it will look anything but fabulous!
