I have an opportunity to buy an engagement ring. It is already set in a platinum, 4-prong setting. It is a very beautiful ring. The ring details are as follows:

GIA certified with all the papers
Round diamond - brilliant
1.05 carat
clarity - SI1
61.9% depth
57% table
medium faceted girdle
D color
cutlet - none
finish/polish - very good
symmetry - very good
fluorescents - none

The ring itself has three small diamonds down each side with the round rock in the middle - a total of 7 diamonds. I will post a picture when I can.

The ring comes from a close friend who bailed out when he was going to propose. It has been appraised at $7800 - with papers. He paid about $7400 for it about 4 years ago.. He took the ring to a jeweller to sell it and learned the hard way about jewellery mark up - the jeweller offered him $2300 for the ring. He has offered it to me for $2500.

I suppose I may be asking you the most obvious question, but here goes - Is this a good deal for me? I am ready to buy a ring right now. I like this ring and know my lady will like it too. Im planning on popping the question next week. The size of the band will likely have to be adjusted, or if she isnt happy with the ring setting i am happy to change it.

Forgive me if Im asking the obvious. I was planning on paying a lot more money for a lot less ring. It feels a little cold to be thinking about value for money of the ring as I know my sweetheart will appreciate things no matter what. Im not rich, but i wish to buy her a diamond ring that she will be pleased to wear.

I think it''s a good deal.

We need more information to tell you about it. Specifically the crown and pavillion angles. They should be on the cert. But $2500 for a 1 ct. stone certainly sounds fair to me.

I would just be very cautious...some women do NOT want a ring that was the result of a broken (well, I guess never started) engagement. So if this ever might get back to her and/or she has ever seen this ring before, DO NOT DO IT. Otherwise, I would get it independently appraised and if you then still feel comfortable doing it, go for it.

Yeah, sounds like a pretty good deal to me! Like you said, you were going to spend a lot more money for a lot less ring.

As always, some deals are too good to be true. Other times you are in the right situation at the right time.

Definitely do your homework on that one because it sounds too good to be true.

If you''ve seen it and are happy with it, I think you should take him up on it. Maybe I''m missing something too because I''m pretty new to this, but if all the paperwork is in order, the ring looks good in person, and you''re getting a nice-sized rock for a fraction of the normal price because you just happen to know a guy who doesn''t need the ring he bought, I''d say it sounds like serendipity.

It sounds good, but I''d still ask to do an independent appraisal before you decide. This is a business deal, even if you are friends. If everything matches up with the cert., and you are satisfied, great. I think I''d consider having it reset. Some women would have problems with the idea of a "used" or otherwise not completely brand new ring. Just an idea though.

Thank you for your replies. Indeed my only reservation is the fact that it is a "used" ring. Having said this it has never been put on another intended''s finger...

neatfreak, you bring up my only reservation concerning this ring. I can, however, convince myself that it was not part of a broken engagement, and Im confident my love will never find this out. While I wont be offering up this information voluntarily, I will never keep it a secret from her should she ever ask me about it though.

i agree lyra, and Im thinking of giving her the option of resetting it in a ring she is happy with.

Thanks again people. I will post a photo in the next few days
