Hi, I'm a fairly new diamond enthusiast and would greatly appreciate your knowledge when it comes to my future wedding ring's diamond. The jeweler I work with had this 0.52ct F/VS2 cushion modified brilliant ordered for me and today I went to see it. The diamond seemed fine, but now that I'm at home I went to check the specs with Diamond Database and it says it doesn't look its weight. I'm a bit concerned if its an actual problem and I should reconsider or if it's just something to do with the fact that it's a cushion cut and therefore harder to determine any clear ideals for it to fulfill.
Also if there are any other points to notice about the stone's characteristics? Is the girdle ok?

I am going to have it bezel set (to protect the diamond) in a platinum ring with 10 x 0.02ct side stones.

Some info if my situation with it being a w-ring puzzles you:
I'm from Northern Europe and we have a really different way of dealing with e- and w-rings. The engagement rings are usually picked together and it is always the more plain one, traditionally with no stones - though today many women get diamond bands with some small sparkle. Before (not the only option nowadays) both had exactly the same kind of ring as their engagement rings and only the woman then had a wedding ring with diamonds when it came the time. The wedding ring is therefore the more sparklier and expensive one, but the size of the rocks is still waaaay smaller than what you are used to. The normal size for an adequate solitaire is somewhere around 0.2ct. Main stone around 0.5ct is - believe it or not- considered to be quite a honker.

Also, I'm doing my undergraduate studies at uni and hubby to be has only been working for a year or so - which means we are working with a humongous budget compared to local standards - and our income..

But here are the stats, please comment on anything you find or if (and especially then) you think it's a good buy:

Didn't have much sleep last night thinking about the stone and if it's ok or not. This diamond selecting stuff really seems to bring out the OCD in me.. :( I feel so uncertain if I will come to regret the stone later on. That would just crush me.

I trust the jeweler and am happy to work with them on our wedding rings. But. Yesterday I saw my diamond only as it lay on the light blue paper it came in and then laid on a dark wooden table. I asked for some mounting to see it in (thought about the sort of stuff GOG shows their diamonds set to on their videos) but they didn't have those. I've been thinking about going back and asking to have the opportunity to see the optic properties (flame and light reflection?) better with my own eyes. Should those be looked at through a loupe or just as it is? They didn't have any ASET or other type of pictures to look at either.

I understand that as a new member of the forum and my very first post being a cry for help type might make you less willing to comment on the post. Having said that, I would appreciate any information or comments regarding the stone as I've read the forum for a while now and I'm certain you guys would have the insight to do so. I am sorry if my English is also an off putting factor - not a native speaker as I said before.

I know nothing about cushions, but I'm sure eventually someone here will advise you. Your post brings up a lot of questions and there are no pat answers. Is your main concern with this stone light performance?
You could also, while you are waiting, do a search here for a diamond that is close to yours in specs and see what they look like for comparison [James Allen has videos].
Sorry to not be more helpful. It will all work out!

Thank you Jimmianne, your suggestion to compare with other stones with videos hadn't even crossed my mind. I will do that NOW! :))

I guess my main worry concerns the optic characteristics. Since the stone is smallish I have great hopes for the effects of it making up for the size - if that makes any sense. I would be really disappointed if I notice with time that my ring has a diamond with that slushy, frozen spit look. I was just too excited to take a good proper educated look at the stone the other day to make any notes about that and I don't know how I should be looking at it to make any sense of the real characteristics. I understood that the depth of the stone might be a problem in this sense and now that I've studied some more I've come across some stats saying that the table percentage is also too big for the carat size. Urgh.

I am also a bit worried, if the bezel setting will bring out the slushy look more (or any other unwanted feature?) if there is one to begin with.

I called them today and I'm going back tomorrow to take another look at it with the jeweler's apprentice. I explained my worry about the crushed ice effect but he said that the stone's so small I probably won't be able to distinguish it anyways if there is something like that. I don't know if there's any truth to that.

A quick update:

I bought an ASET scope and a half carat AVR. Went to the jeweler to take a look at the original stone he offered with the ASET and also brought the AVR for them to set. Slushy slushy white and green mess the half carat cushion they had. I am SO HAPPY with my choice not to accept it. I think I dodged a bullet. A 2500 dollar slushy lousy bullet. For the same amount I got a more than lovely AVR, including all the shipping, tax etc. costs. And frankly I feel quite special for owning one. :wink2:

I posted some more than lousy pictures on SMTB. Feel free to show it some love.

Great choice! I checked out your thread. I'm glad you ended up with a pretty, sparkly diamond. =) I'm a fan of AVRs though I don't own one.
