Hello All,

Anyone have knowledge regarding the cost of changing a setting with white gold prongs to platinum prongs? I inquired about this at the store that has the setting I am interested in. The saleswoman told me it would cost about $200 to change the prongs to platinum?

Do you think this is a fair price?? If not, anyone know of a good designer who would be cheaper?

Thanks for any input!

More information is needed to answer this question accurately for you... Are you talking about just changing the head that holds the prongs? Or are you referring to re-making a gold setting in platinum? And what size and shape is the center stone? Got a picture of the setting? Post it here...

Thanks for the reply Niceice. I was just referring to the actual prongs that hold the diamond. The ring itself will remain 14k white gold. I was looking at a 1ct round diamond. The setting is somewhat similar to the attached picture except the sidestones are round (3 on each side, 80tcw) and the shoulders are solid...meaning no space in the ring.

Hope that helps explain things...Thanks.

one would have to see a picture of the setting, and see how large the stone is and head to be changed. The dollar has fallen alot lately, and platinum and gold is very high, Considering most PT heads can cost from $50 to $120 wholesale, with shipping, dismounting, soldering, resoldering, re setting and polishing, and of course with the mark ups most mall stores charge...I can easily see them charging about $200.

If you want a better price cut out the middle men. Go to an actual goldsmith who does that for a living and on a regular basis. I think you will be quite supprized how much less expensive it is. But to tell you for sure, more info would be needed.

Ahh, you listed a pic when I posted my post. What are you getting is the mall price. A head like that it PT would tops be about $80, then the labor to change it over...maybe an hour at $30 per hour.

Thank you David...I guess I could have been a little clearer...the actual prong style I would prefer would most likely be six-prongs. That is something I did not clarify with the jewelry store when I inquired about the price. I am assuming a six-prong style would add a few more dollars to the price you indicated?

6 prong would be a little more because of the additional weight but not by much...$10 to $20 more tops, Pt is a bit more expensive at the moment but heads just dont weigh that much...so yes, its a few dollars but nothing painful
