OK so this is stupid, but I just got a haircut and I didn't specify exactly how much I wanted cut...I said at least 2.5 inches because it had been a long time and I needed a haircut, and that would be the length that my hair usually is after getting cut. I think he must have cut at least 4.5 or 5 inches, and now I cannot STAND my hair. Really, every time I look in the mirror I just want to cry, I hate the way it looks. Pulling it back into a ponytail doesn't help either because I used to be able to really feel my ponytail and now I can feel how short it is :( :( anyway sorry, vent over, I just REALLY miss my hair

i can COMPLETELY relate! This happened to me 3 weeks ago. I said it was long and needed to be cut but still long enough to be in a ponytail! ( and this hairdresser knows me and knows how i like my hair!) I ran into a friend and got sidetracked and all of a sudden she is DRY (before the hair has even been washed) cutting 3 inches off my hair!! it took everything in me to remain calm! She definitely cut off a total of at least 5 inches (and I have curly hair so that is A LOT!) because my hair went from mid chest length curly to shoulder length!
i am totally feeling for you...

thanks smiles, I think we have a similar situation. I really trust this hairdresser, he is great and I have been going to him forever so I usually just let him take control, and I could tell that the ends really needed to be cut off, they were getting scraggly...but now I really don't like it :(

Aw I feel your pain slg! Does you hair usually grow quickly?

The silver lining is that it will be healthier now. {hugs}

Aw, slg I feel ya! I had the same feeling when I cut my own bangs a couple months ago. I tried the side bangs and half of them turned out to be in the middle/upper part of my forehead

But you will get used to your hair in a couple days and I'm sure you will find some hair styles that will make short hair feel more normal. Hang in there!

:(( If you absolutely can't stand it, would you consider hair extensions? I've got really fine hair so I've been using them for the past four years for thickness/added length. I have tried so many different varieties

I've had them sewn in (tracks/wefts), glue, tape, clip-ins, and loop micro ring extensions (I order these on ebay). I had a bad experience with glue, it's a mess. I wouldn't recommend it. Getting weft sewn in is very time consuming. I had this done in a salon once and was there for the better part of a day. I found this method caused build-up. The tape extensions are okay. Clip-ins are good for a quick fix but I wouldn't use them on a daily basis. I occasionally get clip-ins if I need extensions before my loop extensions arrive.

The loop extensions are my favorite -- they are SO easy. I can do them by myself without a mirror. I redo them every other week or so. I just watch a movie and work on it. Extensions aren't for everyone due to the maintenance but it sure beats a bad hair cut!

If you don't want to deal with extensions, what if you got a different hair style altogether? One that didn't require cutting length off, adding layers or bangs... I'm sorry you have to deal with this. Hopefully it will grow back fast!

I hate that! I feel like they always cut more than you want. I did the whole slanted- stcked bob look las summer. They cut it toooo short~ The back was just under the back of my skull....they had to shave my neck, the front above my chin. I felt like aboy and was too shocked! I wanted it a good 3 inches longer and it took a long time to get used to it. Good news, it grew to my desired lenght in a few months, and it really didn't look as bad as I thought.

It's amazing how much our hair ties in to how we feel about our looks. I'm so sorry you are going through this. Once i went to the hair cuttery and asked for layers and oh boy did i get some! Some pieces were 2 inches long. I cried for quite awhile while getting ready every morning. I learned a valuable lesson though...pay for a good cut. You could add some hair pieces to make it longer or feel fuller. Is it just the length you are unhappy with?

This would be a good time to spoil yourself with vitamins, good conditioner and pretty wraps to keep your hair covered when you go out. My hairdresser read the riot act for my carelessness with my hair, and having to have three inches of dead stuff taken off. Now I cover it up when its cold or windy likes she warns me to.

grrr! I hate That!

ok, it will grow, I think you need to pull an Andelain/Wintotty to help yourself thru! :naughty:

vbnet I like your suggestion :) sadly I am a graduate student so I don't think that will be happening any time soon :) :)

my mom is sending me some biotin which may or may not help (but I figure it can't hurt)?

yes, it is just the length, I think in a few months it will be fine but I am so used to seeing myself with LONG hair, not shoulder length hair and it feels (and looks) weird to me

Try coconut oil to help it grow faster. I dismissed this as an old wives' tale til I tried it myself. I get organic, undeodorized coconut oil from Whole Foods and slather it on once a week.

Ok, I will give a few "mom" responses because I'm a mom and I can't help myself!

Don't worry, it will grow back soon.

It doesn't look as bad as you think it does.

In fact, I'm sure it looks great!

Don't worry, you'll get used to it.

Ok, now that my mom responses have been absolutely no help in comforting you ( I know this, because that's what my daughter tells me) I will just send you a hug and tell you I totally understand how you feel. I don't think it's stupid at all. It really is amazing how much our self-confidence and how we feel about ourselves is affected by our hair. I'm sure many of us have had the experience of getting a haircut and then looking in the mirror and saying "what the...?" I know I have. I'm sorry you're upset, and I do hope you start feeling a bit better as you adjust to the new look.

Hey guys-thanks for all of your responses :) I am getting used to it-I think it was just sort of shocking at first. It's not TERRIBLE, but I still prefer my hair a little longer. I think I will try coconut oil, even if it doesn't grow faster it's supposed to be good for the hair!

ETA NO ONE has noticed, so maybe it's not THAT different???

I really feel your pain. I've cut my own hair for years and last summer my sister talked me into going to her hairdresser with her. I asked for a trim. They lopped like 6 inches off for no reason, my hair wasn't damaged at all. And I couldn't put it up the way I like to be able to do until just this month. It made me mad for *months*, especially since I like to be able to put my hair up in the summer especially, and I couldn't all this last summer. And reminded me exactly why I always distrust hair stylists! It happens way too often that they just start hacking it off.

Sorry! Nothing sucks more than too-short haircuts. Hopefully your hair grows fast. Can you maybe color it something fun to make it a bit more palatable for awhile? Or get some cute hats?

Oh, you know what I used over the summer actually, now that I think about it? I got a cute hair pin thing off etsy to put my hair up so I wouldn't have to look at it. It's this double spiral sterling clip that you stab a poky thing through (er, technical term obviously ). You wind your hair up in the back like a french twist and then put the clip over the twist and stab the poky thing in it, and it keeps your hair up. I still missed being able to put my hair up into a big poof on my head but the hair clip was a big help actually. Lemme see if I can find it... I'll post a link if I can.

ETA: This is the clip I got, except in sterling silver. It's super cute and easy to use:http://www.etsy.com/listing/54318777/venus-recurve-large I didn't use it for the hairstyle in the pic, I just twisted my hair up from the bottom and let it poof up over the clip at the top, rather than doubling it back down like in the photo.

ugh. I feel for you! ;(

Like LGK I cut my own hair, and the one time I had it done (right before our engagement, as it turned out) he cut it much too short - I look twelve in all our engagement pictures.

But.. hair *does* grow back! In S. Indian culture it is normal to daily oil one's hair with coconut oil, I do weekly treatments as I don't like the stickiness, and even that often they really do work wonders! It may or may not help it grow back faster, but it will be oh-so-healthy and thick and shiny, and absolutely no dandruff or any of those other icky issues :))

   She's right, that'll help you forget all about your hair! :naughty:

I had it happen a little over a year ago, a guy that apparently doesn't know much about giving good haircuts did a chopjob on me and cut it way too short. When I realized how bad he was butchering it I stopped him from cutting any more and told him it was terrible.

so you just use pure coconut oil (like for cooking?) or a special conditioner that contains coconut oil? and you can get this at whole foods?

if you have an Asian/Indian market nearby you can get this stuff, I use about a couple of tablespoons (I have pretty long hair) once a week, let it sit for a couple of hours and wash out. Just don't plan to do anything active while you've got it slathered on - the stuff is runny! You can cook with it too - I substitute for fresh or shredded coconut for a 'meatier' flavour

or - you can amazon for it http://www.amazon.com/Parachute-Coconut-Oil-200-oil/dp/B000HLCKC8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1291427750&sr=1-1

My mum/grandmothers swear by this hair oil but I don't like the smell.

Amazon is awesome!
