I found a pendant stone that looks great on paper. 1A for AGA, 1.1 hca---smack in the gia/aga boxes, with a GREAT price for $515 for 0.40ct with a gia dossier. Now, I think the company is a drop shipper so they can''t tell me anything about the stone and what it looks like. What do all of you do when you find a stone like this? Do you idealscope it when it arrives? Bring it to an appraiser? I''m completely lost. Thanks!

Hi,

You can buy an ideal scope for around $25. I would start there so when the stone arrives, you can get an initial look at it. If the HCA is 1.1, it sounds like it''d probably make a great pendant and an appraiser may not be necessary if you have the certificate for the stone. For $515, I wouldn''t even bother having it looked at (but that is just me).

What is the color/clarity? The price sounds amazingly low. When I was looking at stones around that size for my pendant, the only stones that fit that low price were J or lower.

It''s an H VS2.

I was surprised by the price too, but then again I had to sort through hundreds of specs on stones and finally found this one. I wonder if there might be something wrong with it.

The one thing I worry about is if I will use the idealscope again, but from what I read here, people are constantly looking at their stones through the idealscope. I worry about being obsessed!

Yeah, the price is SO low! The J that I looked at online (from a VERY reputable dealer) had an odd ideal scope image. It had near arrows, but the whole set of them was off center. I just checked and the stone is still for sale. It is a J VS2 .401.

If you're worried about becoming obsessed, bite the bullet and toss the ideal scope after you check out your diamond.

How did it score on hca and aga?

hca = 1.6

At first it looked like a great stone. I had a LOW budget so it caught my eye, but in the end I decided to spend more and get a different stone. An I or a J both are great colors for pendants. If you''re unsure of that H stone, possibly look around for a lower color from a vendor who provides more info. It''d be a HUGE pain to send a diamond back. I''d stress over that.

Yeah, I think that is what I''m more worried about. I''m worried about if the stone is awful and I have to send it back. It''s more of a "do I really want to start this?" kind of feeling. And then I have to find a goldsmith who won''t screw up and do something strange (like one that I recently worked with through a vendor)...

I did it! I gave in and finally bought the idealscope. Hours of endless fun?
