Hi, and hello, I am new to the forum. I am looking to buy a leo diamond and have the chance of two at the size I am looking for. I already have a Round Brilliant cut at the same size and am looking for another to make my wife some earings! The cuts of the two I have chance are are a modified round brilliant and a modified brilliant cut. Are either of these suitable for making a pair with the one I have (my wifes original wedding ring, now replaced).

Many thanks,

Russell

Isn't the leo diamond one of the funny round cuts? It's not a RB because it doesn't have the right number of facets -- this would be reflected in the cert ("modified round brilliant").

If you want to match her original ER diamond for earrings, look at the cert and try to find the same cut (likely "round brilliant" without the modified) within 1 color grade and 1 clarity grade, with similar proportions (L x W x H, table %, depth %, and similar crown angles, etc.).

You probably don't want one RB and one modified RB because they will look different enough for people to do a double take. I know, her face is inbetween her earlobes, but still. I certainly think I would do a double take.

Hi, I think it does have more facets than standard, therefore my original should also be a modified as it doesn't technically comply. Have took a punt on the modified brilliant, was a good price so if it's wrong I can always resell it!

'Brilliant', in diamond lingo, means that the facets on the pavilion side are long skinny things that radiate out from the culet to the girdle. 'Round' is obvious. Princesses, for example, are a square brilliant. You can also get oval brilliants, heart brilliants and many other shapes. The classic pattern you see around a lot is a round brilliant with 8 fold symmetry on both the crown and pavilion and that's become known as a modern round brilliant or sometimes just round brilliant. It's not right or wrong, it just is what it is. 'Modified' round brilliant means any round brilliant configuration OTHER than that. That covers a lot of territory so if you're trying to match a stone it becomes terribly important to know what the modification is of each. Both may be lovely and both can be modified round brilliands but they may not match at all.
