Hello guys, I have an opportunity to buy a used round diamond and would value your guys opinion of the diamond. The diamond is GIA certified with these specs. HCA rates it at 2.2 which states its worth buying if the price is right. What would you guys pay for a diamond like this not from a store?

Carat Weight: 1.52

Cut: Excellent

Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Flourescence: None

Depth: 60.7 %
Table: 59.0 %

Welcome Eric,

It looks to be a decently cut diamond, as to what to pay on the secondary market...My advice to you is to arrange for an independant appraiser to examine the diamond to check it for authenticity, possible damage etc prior to any purchase - and to also give you a purchase priced based on your intentions. Here is a tool you can use to find an appraiser in your area.

What is the situation concerning who is selling it?

I see, well get that appraisal, if the price is right then it might be a good deal, but get a pro to check it out.

Assuming it does come out like the GIA cert what price would you guys pay for this diamond. I was going to offer below $12,000

Personally I would go with about half of retail...again, assuming that it checks out as a nice stone with an appraiser.

Checking out retail prices on a like stone they come out to $15,000-$18,000. That would be great if i could get it for $9,000 or less. He would probably be insulted if I offered him that.

He''d be lucky to get 9K for it. Re-selling diamonds is tough. Diamonds are not good investments. They are like cars, once your drive off the lot....

Agreed. Unfortunately not everyone understands that. If he''s insulted by all means let him go elsewhere to try to sell it, but he would be lucky to get 9k for it and I think he would quickly find that out...

Theoretically if you could find a superbly cut stone it is much better to buy on the secondhand market...unfortunately they are hard to find on the secondhand market!

Yup, the type of super-ideals we like around these parts are rare, most of the stone out there are not well cut. But diamonds aren''t investments, it is a luxory item you enjoy for as long as you want (or can

). Who cares about it "depreciating"? We dont talk about the depreciation in value of a great vacation or a nice meal. Try re-selliing one of those! LOL!
