I am trying to learn more about radiant cuts. I have seen numbers like 1x1.4. I gather that these numbers are the length and width of the stone? I know it isn''t millimeters so what does it mean? It is my understanding that the farther the numbers mean how square or rectangular the stone is, but how do these numbers tell you just how rectangular a stone is?

I hope this post makes sense.

Orbaya,

The 1 to 1.40 length to width numbers would mean that the longer side would be 40% longer than the shorter side. I hope that makes sense!

So a number of 1 to 1, or 1 to 1.1 would indicate a very square stone, where a 1 to 1.36 would indicate a more rectangular stone.

A great site to check out fancy shape length to width is Gemappraisers.com . Go onto their Fancy Shape Selector and play with the length to width of Radiants!

Have fun!

fyi --and you probably alrready know this --but to get the ratio you divide the length by the width.................................

oh just my two cents but Emerlad cuts can go alot narrower and still fit accepted standards for appeal.............I think a radiant that is say 1.15 to 1.25 are the most attractive --very squarish rectangles but ofcourse like most of this stuff...............eye of the beholder.

Okay...I''m dumb today I guess, because I can''t find the place to play with length to width ratios on Gemappraisers. I found the chart but no play to "play." I want to play!

Also, I want to see if I am interpreting the ratio correctly. If I divide 7.73 by 6.17 to equals 1.25. Does that mean that this is 25% longer than the width?

Thanks!

Orbaya,

I am sure you are not dumb any day!!

If you go onto Gemappraisers.com on the page that comes up, look to the left under document retreival. The second title down is "fancy cut selector". Click on there and a small window comes up. Across the top of the window are all the shapes, click on the one all the way to the right (Radiant). When the Radiant comes up, you have two options for playing. You may input your length and width in the proper area, or you may move the ball across the line from right to left to change the length and width ratio so that you can get an idea of what length to width shape you like the best!

Good luck!

And yes, the numbers you gave would indicate that the length is 25% more than the width.

Thank Icelady! I found that cut selector yesterday...it was the only place I didn''t look on that website, of course.

And I thought looking for a great RB is difficult, even with known ideal proportions. Now I have to go and like radiants better...which seems to be twice as hard lol! The other stone I want to research is Cushion. I want something a little different. Thanks for the help!
