Well I was freaking out while I was looking at and reading all the great stuff on here Saturday night, when suddenly I just felt my diamond turn! I ran in my our room and woke FI up and he thought the place was burning down

So my diamond wasn''t able to twist all the way around in the setting but just a bit to each side. Is this a common problem? My friend has had this happen to her 2ct stone and was considering adding another prong (s). We both have our diamonds set in plat with a 4 prong head.

My diamond was replaced from a 1.10 to 1.12 due to a chipped girdle and I thought maybe the new stone just didn''t fit perfectly as the first one (the first one was sent to Tacori to be set)I''ve only had it for 3 months and I was just beside myself and now I worry that it will happen again.

My jeweler said that prongs have a memory and it will be fine and they bent it back into place, I guess.

Yikes, any opinions? Has this happened to anyone?

Thanks!

Loose prongs are common after some wear and tear. Don''t wear the ring until you can get them fixed. Preferably, send it back to Ritani.

It was already fixed by the jeweler it was bought from the next morning. I could never send it back to Tacori b/c I don''t think I need a new head, unless it keeps happening. I couldn''t bear to leave it for 4 weeks anyways. It kept getting snagged on the couch or other things.

So this is common then? And the solution is just to bed the prongs back into position?

I am sure I read somewhere on PS that if you fiddle with your ring you can loosen the prongs. If it keeps sliding to the side and you keep pushing it back up top with your fingers on the diamond part you could loosen it too.

Oh wow, never thought of that, I will just try to push it on the setting from now on. Thanks!

Prongs usually need to be tightened after long periods of wear, but a loose stone after only 3 months is not normal. I''m not an expert, though. It''s also hard to say if the jeweler made a mistake in the initial setting or if you''ve knocked the diamond loose somehow. I suggest that you buy a 10x loupe so after you get the prongs fixed, you can look at the prongs yourself and verify that they are secure over the stone. Or you could take the ring to an independent appraiser and have him/her check. Take a look at this page of prong problems that Missrocks posted in another thread: http://www.mabdiamonds.com/Prong.html.

urseberry, where do you recommend buying a good loupe that is not too pricey? BTW, thanks for the idea.

I was also going to suggest that link that userberry put up - from reading this, I would think you''re problem is inherent in the way it was set and an issue with the actual prongs, not from wear and tear. What do you think you''ll do?

I don''t know. I''m p''d at the jeweler b/c he is a pompous ass to put it nicely. But I have to kill him with kindness so he doesn''t try to screw me. I was ticked that after 3 months I found a chip in my girdle and he made me file it under my insurance! I thought he should of replaced the stone, no questions and then mow 3 months after that my diamond was turning, shady! I never had prong problems with the first stone, never caught on anything, now it does.

I get ticked just thinking about it but I don''t want to give up my ring to get fixed b/c I love it that much. We have our wedding shower coming up, and then I don''t want people to ask me where it is when they see me not wearing it for a few weeks. He has to send all the rings to chicago where the cutters and setters are. I hate the wait!

so after pondering ideas in the shower about this situation, I am going to go tomorrow to the place where we bought our wedding bands from, which is a diff. place than the e-ring jeweler, and I will ask them to kindly check to see if the prongs were set correctly. IF not I will ask their opinion on the situation. Unfortunately if I have to get any work done, it has to be through the original jeweler b/c the warranty will be void if I have work done else where. So I hope that this will help me solve this issue.
