When buying a diamond online like I am, should I send this diamond to another company prior to buying it for an unbiased review and appraisal? It is a GIA certified diamond.

I'd like to also like to insure this diamond, am I able to do that simply with my receipt or does it need to be appraised? My thoughts are I could kill two birds with one stone (no pun intended), have the diamond gone over and have it appraised. Is this common practice?

Do we know if James Allen will allow it to be sent to another company prior to me purchasing or would I have to purchase it first?

Lastly, any recommendations on a good appraiser?

You don't need to do that. If you have James Allen set the stone, you can see if your insurance will accept the sales receipt. I don't know if they provide a separate insurance valuation or not. But you can go to any fine jeweler who does appraisals and get verification that the stone is the one in the setting and a written valuation for insurance. You need to discuss with them that you do not want an inflated value, and this is why it is SO much easier to insure with the sales receipt if they will let you.
