questions about shared prong settings

Hi Ladies,

Please forgive me if these questions have been discussed before, but I have several questions about shared prong aniversary bands. I adore the Memoire petite prong rings but they are a bit out of my price range. I'm wondering how durable shared prong settings are made by other jewelers. Is this a setting you could wear every day? Is it common to lose a diamond from this type of setting? Can it be worn next to an e-ring or would it scratch the e-ring? I'm looking for a 7-9 stone shared prong ring.

Thanks so much!

you can wear a thin 2mm spacer ring between the two ring.

Hi, lasposa,

I've been wearing my shared-prong eternity band for nearly three years and haven't lost a stone yet. I'm gentle with my jewelry, though, and it seems like that has a lot to with how well pieces hold up for people. For reference, my eternity band has 7-pointers in it.

I wore it with my original engagement ring for nearly three years, and both the band and the e-ring are platinum. The band did wear away at my engagement ring prongs, but it didn't bother me at all. I kind of liked the way it made it a nice, tight fight. However, if they were made of gold rather than platinum, I would have worn a spacer.

I'm now wearing my shared-prong eternity band paired with my grandmother's yellow gold ring, and it hasn't done any damage to the ring, yet. It seems that the shared-prong only wore into my e-ring prongs because they protruded from the band.

I wear a shared prong band from BGD with 5 point stones. I lost one stone very early on and they replaced it, and since have not had a problem. Some maintenance is to be expected for bands like this, especially if you are harded on your rings. But if you choose a reputable jeweler you have nothing to worry about.

The diamonds in the sahred prong band will eat into the prongs on your e-ring if they protrude beyond the plane of the ring shank, though. It is unavoidable (unless you use a spacer). Bead set rings will not cause such wear.
