Questions about AGS

I have recently joined and have been taking in everything. Its amazing what there is to learn.
I am still confused about grades on fancy stones especially pears. Here is the pear that I saw that I liked on JA but the AGS report does not show cut although JA has it listed as premium cut. What exactly does that mean to not have it? It has excellent polish and symmetry.

AGS doesnt have a cut grade for pears.

You need to get an aset image or atleast an IS image to judge cut quality.
The inclsuions also need to be inspected in person by someone at JA.

Ok Thanks. I will see about getting that form JA. Is the AGA chart any indication? I know it says overall cut guide.

AGS only grades rounds and princess stones for now. I would follow the AGA chart as a guide, then make the selection using the ASET. An Idealscope might help too. Ask JA for those two. I think they have an Idealscope but don''t know if they have an ASET.

Chrono..., Do you mean that AGS only gives "CUT" grades to round and princess-cut (and I think also Emerald Cuts)?

But I would want to believe they quality grade all Diamonds..., or am I wrong thinking that?

Oops, I think I left out the word "cut" in my hasty typing. Yes, DG, I meant that ASG only grades CUT on RBs and PCs, and very recently on square ECs too.

You are correct. They will give color and clarity grades on any shape. I get confused as to which stones they actually cut grade as they are doing so much research, but I believe they grade the round, the square princess, the emerald, the square emerald (asscher), and if not already, then soon the oval. Eventually they will assign cut grades for all of the major shapes.

They are also deep into research on such factors as scintillation, stand by for NEWS.

I am still very sceptic in regards to the AGS''s cut grades for fancy shapes....
As far as the trade is concerned..., I just dont see or feel these reports taking off!!! I dont see them anywhere except here on PS

Some of the larger Princess and Emerald (square or elongated) manufacturers I know dont submit any of their production Diamonds to AGS for cut grading!

Now..., we all know that the beauty of Diamonds (mainly fancy shaped) is not measured via their maximum scintillations etc.., etc...

I guess time will tell!

I like my stones to return maximum light and dispersion. Here is an AGS 0 that was cut to unusual specifications to test one of the un normal areas of possible AGS 0 grade for square emerald cuts. I want one!

While I agree that it is ultimately the eye that makes the decision, this is a cutting angle combo that never would have been found without the cut research. As I said, I like great light return, I think this stone is everything I would ever want in a square emerald cut.

Great picture Wink...

But we both know that a split second picture frame is not the reality versus live Diamonds which beauty greatly depend on movement, lighting environment and many other factors....
