Questionable OEC

Hello, Seeking help on this stone..

Story: My original engagement/wedding ring was lost, misplaced, or was stolen. Of course I was devastated, but I'm moving on.

I decided to look for an OEC replacement, and found this one, but I'm a little cautious.

Stats: 3.02, color is CAPE, VVS2 it is warm. However the cut is shallow. I am concerned about the color and cut. I have the option of taking it for 30 days, with a money back guarantee. Of course it looks huge on my finger, (my original was 1.25 Ideal).

There isn't a certificate, just the stores word for it. Of course I would get a 2nd opinion, (or thirty from here) if I go ahead with the purchase. The price is affordable for us, $19.7K. I saw others but for that size they were out of the ballpark.

Attached is a picture.. Any advice?

We'd need a straight face-up shot to tell anything about the cut. It is good you would have time for an appraisal because I think that would be essential.

Thanks, I will go back and get a top picture. I was trying to avoid the shadow over it.

Go near a window and hold your hand straight up and down, then take a pic :)

Where do you live, so we can suggest an appraiser?

I live in Palo Alto, I would appreciate an appraiser. Thanks

From the photo it appears to have a large table and it looks shallow and is showing some of the negative effects of that combo. I am unsure it is an OEC. Please proceed with caution and seek an appraisal locally from a skilled appraiser of old cuts. Also, visit some antique dealers like Single Stone, Langs, or H. Moradi to compare your diamond with other old cuts.

Don't know any appraisers up in NorCal, but go pay a visit to Joe Escobar and Lang's Antiques. :naughty: Do some comparison shopping.

Ditto Dreamer - I'd pass - it'd be different if it was "shallow" in depth w/ a large open culet

Reason:
based on that pic (difference btwn diameter through tilt axis and perpendicular 'diameter') the stone is tilted about 7deg in the pic (pixel count in MS Paint - looks about right)
The facet patterning is awfully indistinct for such a small tilt angle - I'd be esp wary of that "ring" of fuzz under the table on the far side, in my experience that sort of artifact is only exaggerated when you're looking at the stone IRL w/ two eyes.
Then again you did look at the stone IRL and it doesn't sound like it offended you, so we could be wrong - we only have the one tilted pic to work from

ETA Kelpie has a shallow old cut, if you go through her pictures you can see that the facets in her stone are sharp and clearly delineated even at significant tilt, this "clean" facet outlining is one of the hallmarks of a promising stone

Well, I bought the ring, I have 30 days to decide. Monday it goes to the appraiser.

Got more info though...
Measurements: 9.99 x 9.78 x 5.00
Weight 3.02

Dept: 50.58%
Table: 62.5%

Clarity: VV2-2
Color: Cape (which the store describes as NOP) ??

It's a warm color, not icy white. Tried to take better pictures, still having a issue getting good pictures. This on is through a loop.

Thanks for looking.. Appreciate everyone's advice..

No way no how.
It's beyond redemption. Only reason you don't see it on the other side as well is because the pic isn't directly head-on.

Nope, not good. You can do much better for your money. 50% depth and 62% table is  And a recipe for bad cut. That most recent photo shows it as Yssie pointed out. Of course, more than table and depth matter, but those are just so out of whack with one another that there is not a way to redeem the proportions IMO. A stone that shallow would need a very small table, in the 40% range, to stand a chance.

HI:

There is no passion in your posts about this stone. Just size, price and technical data. And the return policy. And although those are important variables, you did not say anywhre that you WANT or LOVE it.

I could be reading into this, but that is enough to lead me to believe you are not completely taken with this stone. If there is any doubt.....

cheers--Sharon

Urgh... you can do better.

Dreamer and Yssie are right - this is not a nice old cut. I understand wanting to get bang *in terms of size) for buck, but the performance is slushy and yuck. :knockout:

Given that budget, the ladies here can find you much nicer prospects. :naughty:

Love this site, you guys shined the "D" light on it.. I love the size and price, I will keep looking.

No need to have take it to an appraiser either.

I am on a budget, but not in a hurry. This is the last diamond, I'll get. I need to love it for all it's qualities.

Thanks, appreciate everyone's time and knowledge.

I am hoping to locate a nice OEC for 20K... Setting doesn't matter that much, I'll re-do it later. If anyone sees something, I'm open to suggestions. I've talked with SingleStone and they are looking too. I love some of their settings.

So the journey continues.. :-)

Contact Adam at Old World Diamonds and tell him your budget and general preferred specs. See if he has anything that might work now, or he can keep you in mind as new things cross his desk.

Have you had a look at the Jewels by Erica Grace website already?

Have you seen this thread? The OP isn't interested in any that were linked by other posters, so I'm sure it's free for grabs.

Would you like to buy from a retailer who offers lots of customer service, information about the diamond, and who has already cherry picked a goodie? Or would you like to buy from an estate seller on ebay who does not offer all those things?

I have looked at the eBay offerings, I would consider an eBay buy. The seller Moradi in LaJolla, seems to have a few.. It would be worth a trip down. I have spoken with SingleStone, and would consider Good Old Gold too. Actually I'm open as long as they have a good reputation on PriceScope. :-)

What I don't trust is my own judgement! I get blinded by the size.. but I do want an element of quality too, specifically on the cut.

This is a cushion but it looks pretty..

I have time, I will contact the vendors... and review any suggestions that come my way.

Thanks...
