I live in Las Vegas and I want to buy a 1.8 to 2.0 carat round solitaire diamond for engagement ring. I have heard the diamond district in Los Angeles is cheap there. Anyone have any good places there I could go or tell me where exactly it is. Also, for an average looking diamond of that size, what can I expect to pay, I emphaisze size over quantity. Thanks for the help!

Size IS quantity...are you sure you didn't mean quality?

If you want to save a buck, shop online and do the appropriate research to find a great vendor and a great stone. Emphasize CUT quality over size since a large crappily cut stone will look exactly that...large piece of crap; but an excellently cut medium-large stone will put out more sparkle and fire. With online prices, lower overhead, and a good budget you don't really have to sacrifice.

Then you dont have to travel.

You can find comparable or better prices online compared to the LA diamond district. If you have someone to work with there, you can get good stones and good deals, but you really have to know what you are looking for and at. Online, you can get a lot of help. Read a few of the tutorials so that you know the basics, and use the Pricescope search engine as a place to start to see what you can expect to pay. Don't sacrifice cut quality. A great cut will hide a lot of color and clarity and make the stone look bigger than a poorly cut stone. Focus more on diameter than carat weight to compare sizes, and you can save a few $$ is you stay just under key sizes where price/carat jumps (such as the 2.0 mark).
