Question regarding a diamond

I am currently about to purchase a diamond from a jeweler that has a diamond 1.04, VS2, G color, and with a medium fluorescence. it measures some where around 6.38*6.39*4.00mm. He said that he bought a piece of stone and had it cut, but has not had it appraised. He is GIA certified and he is a graduate in that field (geologist). I would really like for it to be appraised by GIA since the cost is not that much. I have looked online to see the cost more or less. The diamond is being sold to me for 5,000. I feel that that is a deal to good to be true. Please what do you guys suggest. I already brought it up and the jeweler said he will do a whole report similar to GIA. I don't want to insult him, but my gut tells me to send it to GIA. I asked him how much to send it GIA and he said 300 which I had already contacted them and it's 1.00-1.49 100.00 to get it appraised. I really need some suggestions.

you can't send it to GIA yourself - the vendor must do this.

the appraisal plus the cost of insured return shipping could certainly be $200+. But it would be worth it to me, the word of a GG doesn't mean anything more than what he/she says, and GIA does not endorse their statements officially.

trust your gut....it's rarely wrong and having a GIA cert. will be invaluable if the ring is ever lost or if you want to upgrade and need to prove what you have. When you're spending $5K on a stone, the extra $200 is totally worth it....would be a deal breaker for me.

When you are purchasing something for thousands of dollars- like a diamond- you have the right to be comfortable and happy with your purchase. Tell the jeweler you will pay for the shipping and certification for the stone- as you want to have it officially certified by the GIA lab. No offense, but that is a "deal" breaker for you. You have the right to protect yourself and your purchase.

Yes, thank you everyone for your feedback. I talked to him and he said that it will take to long to send it off to GIA because of the Holidays. He said that he was giving us a great deal, but he actually has someone else who is willing to pay more for it (uncertified). He said that he will continue to look for what I am looking for. I reminded him that it is important for us to get something certified by GIA and he said that was fine and would continue to look for something. He did say that he had a SI1 H color 1.00 for about 5,600. Initially I only wanted to go as far as G. I really want a very goodor excellant cut diamond and it can go all the way up to S12 no further than G color. I just want to make sure that I am get a fair price for the diamond that we are going to buy, because with the band and the diamond we are spending 7,200 and that is a lot of money.

A whole report similar to GIA is no report BY GIA.

If this deal sounds "too good to be true" and you're willing to pay for the certificate, you should do it. That way you'll know exactly what you're buying from an independent diamond grader, not just a vendor who has interest in selling you something.

Good luck!

Sounds like a car salesman to me. "This car is fine and runs great. I am a mechanic on the side so there's no need for your mechanic to look at it. And I can keep looking for the car you want, but I have some other customers ready to buy this one."

Run away.....

I agree with what everyone else has said...if you feel GIA is what will make you feel more comfortable then you should get that. I do know that a lot of wholesalers seem to have issues with sending an already certified stone to GIA even if I pay for it & the response I get is generally the same as what you stated...something about it taking too long and that if I want a GIA certified stone I can have one but it will cost more.... :(( I personally just don't understand what the big deal is. I mean hey if you are selling me something that is stated as X and I get Y then I should pay for what I am actually getting not what you claimed it was! On the other hand there is no science to grading stones - meaning no machine can do it so there is an element of human error or the fact that some things are left up to how one persons eye sees it vs another.

If that salesman is saying that someone will pay more for it then so be it...I wouldn't fall for that "trick" so to say. It could be true but if you know you want a GIA certified stone then that's what you should get.

Hmm...I don't believe that he had another client waiting to buy the stone uncertified for more money than you. I believe that he was feeling very uncomfortable in the prospect of sending the specific stone to GIA, because he KNOWS for a fact that the GIA official report will state lower grades of clarity, color, everything, and he would be exposed in your eyes for trying to deceive you and sell you something of lower quality than he presented it to be...That's why he realized that the best thing to do was to come up with the fake story of another client being interested and tell you that he'll keep on looking for another stone for you...Why don't you test him...Go back and say that you changed your mind and you want to buy the stone uncertified...If he had another client waiting to buy for more money than you, the stone will be sold...But if he still has the stone, you'll know for a fact that he was trying to cheat you....
Honestly, i wouldn't trust such a vendor at all and i would run as far away as possible :nono:

Yes, I completly agree with what everyone said. I think sometimes we don't go with our gut and end up paying the price for that later on. I read that someone said that it might be cut to deep and that might be the case because it did not shine as much now that I think about it. This whole thing about buying a diamond has been such a stressful process from me. I felt like I knew a little about diamonds since I worked for a jewelry store for more than 3 years when I was in college and they send me off to training for a week. We dealt with loose diamonds, but it's sad when it comes to finding my own diamond I feel like I don't have a clue. I'm so glad there are sites like this that I can turn to for others advice. Tomorrow the jeweler is showing me a diamond that is SI2, G color, Excellant cut, GIA certified, and it's 5,100. I am hoping this works out because I do feel like the jeweler is losing patience with me, but it's my 5,100...NOT HIS.
