I recently became the proud recipient of 0.9ct F SI1 round brilliant bought from Holloway diamond. As my boyfriend bought the ring I did not deal directly with Holloway diamond. I was doing some research on SI1 clarity diamonds and it says that inclusions should hardly ever be seen by the visible eye. However, I can definitely see some black markings on the side of the diamond with the naked eye. Can anyone tell me if this is reasonable for this particular diamond. Also, we received a certificate of authenticity from Holloway diamond, should we also be receiving other type of documentation such as the GIA or AGF certificates?

Well, you certainly bought from a respected jeweler! Clarity grades are from the top of the stone only, so if it is eyeclean from the top, then that is good. But SI1 stones are not always eyeclean from the top, and the inclusions can be visible from the sides. In fact, a VS2 can have inclusions visible from the side!

If this bothers you, by all means address it now while you hopefully are within a return/exchange period. I would not be happy seeing inclusions from the side, either. I would think any lab reports should have been given to your fiance at the time of purchase. I have always received my GIA or AGS reports with the diamonds I ordered. The only exception might be if they wait until the return period is over to send them. Ask your fiance, and if he doesn't know, call the jeweler and ask!
