Question for platinum smiths or metal experts

First of all.. please don't judge  As much as I love my upgrade setting I have been dreaming about halos lately and can't help but think of a halo around my stone when looking at my ring. I don't know if it's DSS setting in although the DSS seems to be inconsistent on a daily basis. Some days I look at it and think hmm.. a 2 ct would be perfect and some days I catch a glimpse of it in the mirror and think wow, that thing really is huge.

Anyway, my question is, would it be possible to simply add a halo on my existing ring rather than getting a whole new setting. I like the surprise sapphire and the double band and looking at some halos would it be possible to simply straighten the prongs and "plop" the halo on top with some lovely double claws for the stone.

Not sure if this is a really stupid question but I figured it never hurts to ask. I've attached a profile shot for your reference

A pretty halo could not readily conform to the existing ring. Sure, a plate of metal set with small diamonds could encircle the main diamond, but it will hang out in space and over the shoulder's diamonds. You may find it unattractive after quite a bit of expense. When you can do it right, then go for a new mounting with the proper design and proportions.

thanks oldminer.. would it make a difference if I were looking for a cushion halo instead of a circle?

If you want to use the existing ring as any halo design, it will likely fail to meet your expectations. It is not built correctly for that design. It would always have a patched up appearance to someone who knows what's up.

+1...I agree completely with David.
The entire design of a halo type ring is different.

Good point, David.

Agapitor, I just went back and looked at the photos of your ring in your other thread, and your ring is truly gorgeous. I think the asymmetrical design on the band is stunning and designing a halo to "mesh" with that design would be tough, and look like the two designs were "patched" as David said.

But beyond that, I just want to give you a little support for what you're going through. And if I'm overstepping, please feel free to disregard the rest of this post.

I notice you've only had your ring a month. I went through something similar after I got my upgrade (which happens to be a halo). It took me months to get used to my new ring. At first it felt too flashy (even my husband thought I was nuts). Then I worried about wearing it to work and "offending" someone. Also nuts. Then I worried about wrecking it. Nuts again -- it's a well-made ring, designed for daily wear. I thought about resetting the diamond into a plain setting. I thought about resetting my stone into a vintage platinum setting. I thought about trading my one carat stone in for a larger stone (which would mean a new setting). And on and on an on for about six months! And all this time I was not truly enjoying wearing my ring -- once I realized that, I kind of woke up, and started focusing on its beauty and the fun I had designing it instead of thinking about "what else I could have chosen."

Pricescope offers us so many choices, so I guess it's natural to second-guess our own choices. My advice to you is to make a promise to yourself that you will simply live with and enjoy your ring for six months. When you find yourself questioning your setting and/or your diamond, focus on something you love about your current ring and remind yourself that you're giving yourself six months with no changes.

It's a common affliction around here to want something other than what we have, and I have nothing against upgrades (hey, I admit I'm not done yet either!). But don't let the urge to make a change stop you from enjoying your beautiful ring!

Wise words from Portree. Consider me a ditto on all counts.

Your current setting is a very distinctive, very modern look: while someone like Krikawa or Greenlake might conceivably be able to add an interrupted halo, all of the options I'm imagining wind up looking a little haphazard. If you really want to keep this setting and increase the visual size a bit, perhaps you might consider having the prong-tips sawn off at the height of the basket, and add a bezel setting instead? I think that would actually go with the clean lines of the ring, and lead pretty neatly into the arms of the bridge. Size-wise, bezels can make a huge visual difference, and that way, you wouldn't have to mess with the integrity of the ring too much ...

take it from a serial resetter :errrr: take time away from PS and enjoy your ring. Its beautiful! I love the look of your ring. IT IS BEAUTIFUL!!! I"m only resetting again, as my custom setting was done a bit poorly imo and it made me question everything, I have a very beautiful loose stone not even worn, because I"m afraid to make a decision...lol its been a month and still no decision.

I completely agree with Portree and Circe as well.

Thank you for your input and really no offense taken and you're right I really should just enjoy it for what it is which is really lovely. It really is easy to be tempted with other designs/size with PS there are just way too many beautiful pieces which makes me second guess myself. PS has been a wonderful resource for me in trying to find my upgrade and at the same time, it's been wonderful at giving me facts and bringing me back to reality while proving that I'm somewhat normal with my thoughts and indecision.

Thanks for confirming David. I'll enjoy my ring and save up for my halo in the future.. maybe a RHR? :naughty:

thanks D&T.. As you already know.. I value your opinion. You've been instrumental in finding my ring and I've always found your posts relevant to the information I'm looking for. I think you're right.. I need to take some time off from PS.. maybe a week :(sad and enjoy my lovely ring.

aww I hope I can help if not from a techincal standpoint, just from many many of reset experience. Truly you have a Stunning ring, but it is your decision though, and I will never pass judgement on anyone for resetting EVER  or upgrading within weeks or months - its not my place or anyone elses imo.

Ditto D&T -- No judgment on my part if you do decide to make a change. I've been-there-done-that, and PS is the one place I felt comfortable saying I'm not happy with the size of my new diamond; I want a larger diamond (three weeks after receiving my first ring). My friends thought I was a spoiled brat! So I've been a "speedy upgrader" myself and I know how hard it is to determine if what you're feeling is "normal." It is!

thanks D&T and Portree I've actually never felt judged in all my PS postings and the initial "judging" comment on this post was really more of my own insecurity. I can't say enough how thankful I am for this forum. Like Portree my friends don't really understand my constant admiration of diamond jewelry. I'm quite fiscally responsible but they do think that it's an unnecessary expense and the money could be spent better elsewhere.
