Hi all,

I''ve scoured these forums for a few months now, and I''ve been very grateful for all the information and time you all provide to people like myself (read: diamond novices

).

With a lot of input from this forum, I have decided on a diamond and a setting that I plan on buying this afternoon. I still have one question, however, regarding appraisals. Here goes...

Is an appraiser able to do as good of a job with the stone already set in the ring as opposed to appraising the stone unset? I would like to have the stone sent to me preset. If I have just the stone sent to the appraiser, then I need to pay for the shipping back from the appraiser to the company, and then back from the company (in the setting) to me. So, for the sake of my bank account, I''d prefer to just have the company set the stone in the setting and then send the whole thing to the appraiser.

Is there a reason that this is a bad thing to do? Is there any reason the stone has to (or should) be appraised loose and unset?

Thanks so much in advance for your help!!!

Hi DmdNovice,

The appraiser can do it either way. It is really up to you and if you want an in-depth appraiser. I got my ring appraised after if was completely set and that worked for me. Other would have the diamond appraised first and then get the diamond set. No matter what an appraiser can do the job either way with the proper tools. Good luck.

Hi lmurden,

Thanks so much for your reply. It''s comforting to know others have done it this way, and that there are not any negatives for having the appraisal done this way.

You mentioned a detailed appraisal. What kinds of appraisals are available, and what kind is required for insurance?

Insurance companies only care about rings, not unset stones. If you''re just planning on getting it appraised for insurance then there''s no reason to get it appraised unset. However, you''d want it appraised unset if you were trying to get as much info on the stone as you can (such as to verify you''re getting what you expect, or making sure it''s a nice performer).
