My girlfriend really likes marquise cut, so I have been looking around at various prices. I found one diamond that looks like it a good deal and is in my price range. Here are the specs. It doesn''t mention the length to width ratio which is also important to me. I don''t like the ones that look really long. Can someone tell me if this is a good deal and also tell me what a good length to width ratio is on a marquise? Thanks.

I also need to know what a good depth/table for a marquise is. Another question is exactly what is cullet and if it has an 's' by it then what does this mean and is it good/bad? I'm sorry if these questions are answered somewhere else, but I am looking to buy a ring within a week. Thanks again.

Hey there. i don't know squat about marquis....I suggest going to GemAppraisers.com....scroll down to cut grade charts (or something like that)...then click marquis..that's a great guideline...And you REALLY need to know the length and width for shape appeal...it could be thin or big fat and juicy....

Just out of curiousity...has your gal seen a lot of marquis? In my opinion, I've never seen one without a bow-tie...

I'm thinking that's a really shallow stone...

a bit more...but here is an example of a good performing stone...

Well, here a link to a Tiffani ring on ebay which she has seen and really likes the looks of it. I'm just looking for the best diamond/setting I can find in my price range. I'm not sure what you mean by bowtie?

Let me just correct myself...I don't think the bow tie can be avoided in the marquis, and also, that it is necessary....I just don't care for it visually....unless of course you're buyin' it for me!!!

Thanks for the info. Do you know anything about what a cullet actually is and whether or not a cullet of 's' would be noticable on a diamond. I found this diamond is why I am asking.

it has a small culet? don't worry about it...it's the little pointy thing at the bottom ... lol

Well, your first post made it sound like you hadn't chosen the ring...but now you say she saw it and liked it? Well, it's not a bad price...

oh, it's a signed pieces? They have a good rep...and your gal saw it and liked it? Go for it!

alright- dude, you're confusing the sh*t out of me...which is the stone? You've listed three different ones....

maybe others will comment also!

LOL. Sorry about the confusion. The first and third diamonds I posted I got from a website from a company out of Atlanta. The 2nd ring that I posted, the one on ebay, is just one that she saw and liked the style of. I'm not planning on getting this one, because I want a little better quality and I'm not sure whether or not to trust a seller like this on ebay.

The company out of Atlanta that I was looking at is called Solomon Brothers. Seems like a pretty good place with decent prices. Anyone ever heard of this place?

Yes...they have a great web site...I'm sure if you do a search for them, you'll see others have used them.....

Here is one last diamond that I found on this same site. It is slightly more expensive than the others, but has F instead of E color. Anyway, could some people give me advice on what the best deal is and any other advice would be greatly appreciated. This is quite confusing

I would have loved to see "very Good" symmetry for a diamond with such high color and clarity grades (all three qualify for this description, as far as I know), but this is unusual good news for a marquis cut.

As for the rest - I would look for the L/w proportions (both for the visual impression and for judging depth - a long thin shape also corresponds to a larger depth%, since that is computed as actual depth over width and narrow pieces would have a bigger % there for the same actual depth as a wide one).

Then, those depth and table stats on GIA's papers came into account relative to shape. And it would be great to see some picture or test of brilliance. For once, marquises can be quite lifeless - as long shapes are prone to, so I would definitely value seeing some acount of the stone's optics beforehand. Also, the proportions of the cut do not say much about that famous bow-tie - not that I am very much against some, but a huge patch in the middle of a flawless and colorless piece, what's the use?

The details about these stones are definitely more schetchy than this... so only the most probable faults could be taken into account (the shallow depth of the first stone is one). There is no way I could start guessing what the other two might look like

The F-VVS sounds good unles it is a long piece (say L/W > 2) so that the depth percentage really means "shallow". The same applies to the second piece, although it is marginally a safer bet from this point of view. The smaller table of the second piece should produce more dispersion regardless of what the light return might be.

I would definitely like to know more about these, but the second seems the more likely winner this far

... at least as far as I know.

Well, I tried calling Solomon Brothers today to get the l/w dimensions on the diamonds, but the sales rep. said that she was currently busy with customers and asked for my number so that she could call me back. She said that it would probably be Monday before they could call me back though, because Saturday was "very busy". I'm not sure how to react to this, because she sounded like she was in a hurry to get me off the phone, and I have only two weeks from today before I plan on proposing...

Anyway, I guess that I will wait until Monday and try to get these measurements and I will post them here when I get them. If anyone has another other suggestions for me then that would be great. Thanks for all the help.
