"GIA''s new system is similar to HCA but with symmetry, polish and minor facet data, but the data on GIA reports has been severely rounded. In order of importance: Pavilion 0.2°, Crown 0,5° lower girdle depth 5%. Steeper crown and deeper pavilion GIA graded ''Excellent'' diamonds have a dark ring in the table area and will show the dirt on the pavilion."

so if the stone that I''m looking at is graded ''excellent'' by GIA, it might have a dark ring? and what does dirt on the pavilion mean?

thanks for any info

If the stone exhibits the "ring of death" then that means it''s a dead spot, and you can see clear through the stone, as well as the dirt on the other side.

thanks for the info

Wait,so a "ring of death" is a good thing?

Almost as good as ring around the collar!

No, wait.

Run the HCA, accepting the defaults, and hit "go."

See the big box that is the GIA excellent outline? half is in good territory, and only 1/2 in bad. Good is still good. In fact, per reports from the HCA author, perhaps what is now 1/2 and 1/2 will become 2/3 and 1/3. But even then, still 1/3 will remain bad, and that is not the good thing that is the ring of death.

Ring of death is not a good thing.
