Im a bit confused....if flourescense (sp?) can make a K diamond appear whiter, than how can an appraiser tell that the diamond is K in the first place?....

-P.S.- does anyone have any pics of low color diamonds with flourescence? I am thinking that this might be a good way to get more for my money.....

Yeah so long as you only look at the diamond in daylight or light with loads of UV.

Some say GIA over grade blue fluoro stones anyway - so it might be an L in a lift and I or K in the sidewalk cafe

I am not sure this can be appropriately captured in photos (bar the blue glow in the darkness with UW on). But medium blue is nice for a diamond to have

Here's one pic that Garry gave me some time ago. (hope posting it is ok).
The E-G-K-I are diamond colrs, and teh other letter codes indicate the degree of fluorescence as GIA notes it: F=faint, VS=very strong, M=medium, S=strong.

I do not find the immage all that representative, but this is the only attempt to capture the effect of fluorescence on diamods' aparent color I know of!

The study this picture relates to supported the idea that, bar exceptional example sof VS fluorescence, the effect is barely there, slightly visible if at all. The point was to discard the fame of fluorescent diamonds of being 'oily' or 'milky' or otherwise seazoned. If blue fluorescence has any effect on the visual appearence of an otherwise yellowish diamond, it can only 'whiten it'. A true crime in the land of yellow diamonds - for example. Not a strong effect at all among the white ones.
