we have a platinum wedding band that was used at our wedding but we would like to add diamonds to it. i''ve been asking around at jewelry stores to find out what is possible using the band we already have since it is sentimental. it is pretty thin - about 2.5mm and slightly rounded. some stores say they think i could get pave added, some say no. some say i could probably turn it into an eternity band, but i can''t seem to find anyone who can tell me for sure let alone recommend a place/person to do this.

any info or recommends in the nyc area for this kind of work would be appreciated.

thanks!!!

I think that sounds like a tough one. The work alone will be very costly IMHO. I know you want to do it for sentimental reasons, but may just be cheaper to buy a diamond band that she can wear with her wedding band?? Just a thought.

Also what if the work wasn't done properly then her wedding band would be messed up???

yes, im sure it would be more cost effective to just buy a new one, but we really want to use the wedding band that was used during the wedding ceremony. I''ve been told that at least for pave bands, they start out with a band of platinumu anyway and then just make whole for the diamonds. i''m going to go to more stores that advertise that they do custom work, but was hoping that maybe someone on this site would have a recommendation or some experience with this.

Hopefully Feydakin/Steve will chime in. This is a question he can surely answer.

I think I may have been misunderstood. it is a fairly thin, but not extremely thin band. maybe i am wrong on the 2.5 number but that is what i was told. also, as far as it being rounded - all i meant was that it is not a totally flat band. this is definitely not from wear, just the shape of the band.
here is a link to a band that looks EXACTLY the same size and shape (except that ours is platinum).

would pave or any kind of eternity style be possible to make out of this band?

thanks!!

IT might be possible...a jeweler in my town channel sets (I think that''s the method) into bands similar to that.......so I guess it can be done.....I''ll see if I can find a pic like them....

Maybe something like this could be done...

or these are SOMETHING like the ones I meant......(the ones that were hand made were nicer, IMO)

Don''t even know from which website I pulled pics.......could you do the "etoile" look after the fact?

Steve,
That''s a great idea!!

I wanted to do the same thing, and was told by several respected benchmen that it was really not possible to do to their exacting specifications (of course your ring is different from mine, it may be possible in your case). But the general consensus was that it is not the best of ideas. I like the idea of having someone melt down your rings and use the metal to re-make a ring. In the end, after being married for a while, I discovered that I wasn't very attached to my 'original' ring. I'm not really a sentimentalist, it seems. I'm very attached to the husband.

I think while it is a very nice idea, it may be very hard to do. I like Steve's idea of melting it down and starting from scratch. It's still your platinum from your wedding band and yet updated.

yes - i think the melting idea is the best. only issue now is finding someone who does that.... any recommends in the nyc area appreciated.

thanks for all the advice.
