Morning all,

Have a simple question. I want to purchase a 3 stone ring around Christmas and am wondering about color. When one (regular person not expert) looks at a 3 stone ring can he/she notice the difference between a D color center stone and 2 F or G or H etc..etc...etc. side stones?

Should all stones be the same color or at least in the same range.....so 2 E color side and a D color center? Should the center be the better color of the 3?

Just worried that getting a D center and 2 G sides might make the G''s "dirty" if you know what I mean.

Thanks for your advise.

I have always wondered the same thing.. a lady at a jewelery store told me if the side stones are whiter it won't make that much of a difference in the big stone b/c they are so much smaller they won't take away from it.. but I don't think I believe her. It seems that they should all be the same color or at least close
I am REALLY curious to find out what I am going to get for side stones with my I/J european cut center stone.. I have been a little nervous that my center stone is gonna look super yellow, even though when I have looked at it alone it doesn't look yellow to me at all. I will let you know how it turns out when I get my ring!!

Melissa

It depends on how small the side stones are.

If your center is a 1 ct and the sides are .25 or .30 each, I'd stay within a grade up or down of the center (center H means G, H, I sides).

If the side stones are 5-pointers, than you can get away with a bit more variance.

Id go F center, G side, but thats because I think when they are next to each other you can tell a difference. Usually anyway. Id never go more than one step up or down myself.

Thanks. That is what I thought. Actually I would think to make sure things don't stand out too much that they all should be the same color...say...."D" and the center a vvs2 or so and the sides a vs or si. clear. Get a good/great center and 2 "near" perfect sides.

As for the sizes that is still under question....thinking a center at .70 - .80 and sides in the .40-.50 range. It looks like that would make a nice arrangement on the finger.

Melissa - do post a picture when you get the ring.....

Just a suggestion to consider....

At the size ranges you are speaking of (.70-.80) for center stone and .40-.50 for sides), you should be able to comfortably get all of them with SI clarity (if you're only desire is eyeclean).

In this size range, most SI1s and many SI2 stones are completely eyeclean.

Just something to think about as you try to get the most bang for the buck.

You know...I thought about getting a lower quality....but the engagement ring I bought her is a D VVS2 Ideal / Excelent accross the board. Just want to keep the right hand 3 diamond as nice.

but we will see....more concerend about color at this point.

OK....didn't realize you already bought the center stone. Nice choice, by the way

As long as the sides as eye-clean you should be okay. The key for the sides is keeping the color similar. It won't matter if the clarity as lower because that won't show, but if you vary too much in color, it likely would.

I'd stay with E/F sides if your center is D.

For my 3 stone ring (all RB's) I have a .8 I/SI1 in the center, with .3 on either side - one is H/VS2 and the other is G/SI1. I analyze my ring constantly and cannot tell the difference in color. All are eye-clean on clarity, BTW, and all are ideal AGS 0 H&A cuts so I'm not sure if that lessens the impact of the color difference. Good luck - I'm sure it'll be beautiful!

aldjewey, thanks. I know your right about the e/f color...i will keep it in that range

ksparkles: I see your pic and like the ring. I like the idea of the smaller stones next to the larger one. And your correct...can't really tell the difference between the sides and the center.

I'm going out at lunch today to look at settings.

thanks all!!!!!
