My fiance and I have two questions about the e-ring i just got her, and the Internet seems to be failing us for answers.

Questions #1: Fiance works in a hospital and needs to constantly be using Purell on her hands between meetings with patients. Does Purell have any adverse effects with diamonds in general or with platinum settings? Should she be taking the ring off in order to Purell hands?

Don''t know if it matters, but the stone is a round-brilliant diamond set in a Vatche Royal Crown setting in Platinum.

Question #2: Sometimes my fiance has to take her e-ring off (for surgery or other complex procedures). In those cases she wants to put the ring on a necklace? Anyone have a recommendation for the best way to do this in order to not scratch the e-ring band? Is there a good way to wear a ring on a necklace? Is there an ideal material for the necklace that would be best of care of the ring?

Any help with either question would be MUCH appreciated. I love PS

Since a lot of folks clean their platinum with ammonia, I can't imagine that anything in the Purell would harm the ring. I purell the heck out of my WG and Palladium, and they're fine. Aside from needing to clean them to degunk, she should be fine.

As for the chain, probably should try to stick with platinum or a cord of some sort, so as not to scratch. That said, I wore my WG solitaire around my neck on a plain sterling box chain for a year or so at work and didn't have any problems. The only minor scratching was to the inside of the band.

Platinum does scratch easily though, so a cord might be your best bet.

ETA: Something like this perhaps? http://www.hornsjewelry.com/htdoc/satin_cord_necklace_3mm.htm

hmm, that''s very helpful. Regarding degunking, do you mean that the gunk is normal, or are you saying that you think the purell can create gunk? I know some types of purell can be a bit thick.

Thanks.

My Purell creates gunk, LOL. I'm careful to keep it off the diamond itself, but I usually clean my rings every night to get the purell film off.

ETA: Gunk is normal too. Diamonds attract dirt and oil.

ETAA: I use the lotion purell, which is worse than the normal stuff, as far as the gunk is concerned.

What do you use to clean purell gunk off your diamonds? Is there a particular cloth-type or solution that works well for you? I''m certainly going to check out the other forum posts on this topic of cleaning, but I''m interested in your experience since you use Purell often.

I''m a doctor and use that alcohol hand cleanser all day and it really does build up after a while. I''ve never been worried about it damaging my (platinum) rings though. I work too much to clean my rings daily, but I soak them overnight once a week or so in some windex/water solution and then clean with a toothbrush. Works like a charm! Then occasionally at work I''ll clean my rings off with an alcohol pad haha.

I don''t think purell will hurt the ring or the diamond. I use purell every now and then and I have never seen it do any harm to my ring. Once a week I use a jewelry/diamond cleaning solution to wash out any yuckies that have built up and that always does the trick.

I would never ever take my rings off to wash my hands anyplace other than home. Better to have them get gunked up than to lose them. Many people have lost
rings doing that. If she has to take them off I would get a substantial white gold chain with a sturdy clasp that is long enough to fit under clothing but not
long enough to slip over the head. Then if she has to change scubs she wont accidentally pull it off over hear head with her shirt.
