hello all. i have been lurking on these forums for a few weeks as i am really wanting an upgrade. my ering is moissanite. we didn''t want to go into debt so it seemed like a reasonable choice at the time. now i am really wanting a real diamond. i was at the mall yesterday and at one of the local stores found an interesting ring. it was by the rest of the solitaires and i would have never know the difference if i wasn''t told. it looked like a 2carat round solitaire, but it was a princess with four marquise stones next to it to make it look like one large round solitaire. there were hardley any gaps between the stone. has anyone seen something like this? if you have one do you have pics? it was priced at about $2k.

I''ve seen the concept before, it''s done because building a cluster of smaller diamonds so that they look like a larger diamond of a different shape is less expensive than a diamond of that actual size and shape would be. The fact is that smaller diamonds simply cost less than larger diamonds. The fact of the matter is that to produce a round brilliant cut diamond with a polished weight of around 2.00 carats, the diamond cutter must begin with a piece of diamond rough weighing 4.00 - 5.00 carats; whereas to produce a half carat princess, the original piece of rough was more in the range of 1.00 - 1.50 carats; likewise with the marquise shaped diamonds... So the overall diameter of the presentation of diamond covered surface can be achieved for less $$$.

The real question is whether you like the look of the cluster? Some people love it, some people don''t and only you can decide whether the look is appealing.

Ditto Todd.

Choose a cluster ring because you like the cluster, not because it looks like a bigger solitaire because it won''t fool others.
