I currently have a 2 carat Princess cut EGL certified diamond that I purchased for 10,500. I am trying to change it to a 2.00 carat Assher cut but they want to charge me another 10,000 for the same size diamond. I am starting to wonder if the first diamond was a really good deal or if it isnt a really good diamond and thats why the price was so much less. I only bought the ring 4 years ago. Have prices really doubled? Does it sound about right to pay approximately 19K for a 2.00 carat Asscher cut approximately H color and VS2 clarity? I dont know if I should just stick to the stone I have and change the setting or but the stone that I want?

Any opinions????? My EGL certificate is not from the US. I have been told my ring is more like a 1.87 but EGL certified it as 2.00. I dont know if any of this is true because the jeweler who told me this was also trying to sell me another diamond.

The price of your new stone can vary quite a lot depending on details other than color, clarity and weight. Use the link at the top title and you can play with a few of the choices and look up a variety of offers.

The questions about one you’re selling are more difficult. Assuming that the trade is happening somewhere other than at the original seller, it’s entirely appropriate that the dealer is going to use their own grading standards to decide if they want to buy it and they will set a price so that they can resell to another customer and still make a profit in the deal. This too will vary quite a bit depending on facts that you’ve not provided and will depend on whether the dealer agrees with what EGL has to say. It’s common that they don’t. You can use the same database to look for comparable items with the understanding that ‘comparable’ is a negotiable topic. Dealers will normally pay anywhere from ½ to ¾ of the prices listed here.

You may find it helpful to get an appraisal on the one you have so that you know what you actually have.

The jeweler I spoke to says that he would give me 9000 for my princess cut (which i purchased for 10500) and sell me the other at 19000. I would have to pay an additional 10000 for the same size diamond in a different cut. That is what puzzled me. Could it be that the first diamond was a really good deal or have prices just really gone up. I am hesitant to think there is such a thing as a really good deal when it comes to buying diamonds. I think you can get discounts here and there but this price nearly double.

Prices vary wildly, but it may be the case is that you are not getting a good price for the asscher.
