Princess Setting Inspiration

I was browsing one of those cheap mall "jewelry" places (you know, the ones that sell earrings 5/$2) and I saw this ring and I just fell IN LOVE. I bought it (even though it''s two sizes too big for ANY of my fingers & can''t be readily resized) thinking that someday, I may use it for inspiration.

Then I found you guys

and now I''m concerned. If I were to have this made in "real", knowing that on a princess the corners are very vulnerable, would this setting be asking for trouble?

I wish I had a side view to post--it''s not just prong-set, it''s rather like a bezel but instead of the CZ being set into the bezel, it''s suspended above the bezel with the prongs. So, instead of the bezel surrounding the entire CZ, it surrounds just the pavilion and the prongs hold onto the girdle to keep the stone in place.

Thoughts, anyone? Would this be problematic?

i don't think you would have a problem like that just as long as the corner are covered with prongs. but obviously, you shouldn't be rouge with any kind of jewelry. if the stones and the setting is done the right way, you wouldn't have a problem at all.

now to correct you on what you said about the side of the ring....it's not any type of a bezel setting. it's a solid prong setting and not an air-line setting. usually in a ring like that, a solid setting is used because of the design of the ring. they cannot (and shouldn't) use a air-line or a basket setting because it's too weak for a ring like that.

if you have any more questions, let me know. my father's a jeweler and a designer so i know a little bit about this .

one more thing i forgot to add.......

the setting of the ring should not be high at all. it should be a low setting. it will prevent the stones from knockings. and i also advise that it be done in 14k white instead of plat. it'll be better for wear and tear

Sorry...my limited knowledge didn't allow for the best description.

It IS very low-set--that's one of the main reasons I like it. The setting is flush with my finger, no lift at all.

Okay, great! Glad to hear I may be able to use this setting after all.
