Hi

Does anyone know where you can buy princess cut melee diamonds? A friend has a project in mind and wants to buy some E/F. Most of the jewellers she has approached have offered to source but mainly in H/I colour.

We can recommend setting makers who would use F color melee if requested....Victor Canera, Steven Kirsch, WhiteFlash, Engagement Rings Direct, Maytal Hannah, etc., etc. I think rather than attempt to buy melee, she needs to change who is making the ring.

It's nearly always better to buy the supplies from the people who are going to do the setting. There are a couple of reasons for this. Firstly, they have better access to suppliers than you do. Their suppliers have less incentive to lie since they're likely to be repeat customers while you aren't. The other has to do with liability. The setter, the mounting manufactuer and the stone supplier tend to get into a game of fingerpointing when problems come up. This can be completely eliminated if they're all the same outfit.

You don't actually save much money by sourcing melee the way. Most of the costs in a ring are in the design and labor, not the materials (other than the center diamond). The solution is simple enough. If you're jeweler can't or won't do what you want, either listen to their advice about what is possible/advisable/desirable and what isn't, or find another jeweler. It's a highly competitive business.
