Hi,

My boyfriend and I have been looking at diamond engagement rings recently and have managed to narrow our search down to two rings. The problem we now face is which ring to choose. Both are beautiful, so we are trying to decide which is the 'better' stone, but we just dont know.

One is a 1.06ct F colour VS1 princess cut, with an excellent cut and very good symmetry and polish.
The other is a 1.01ct G colour VVS1 princess cut with and excellent cut and polish and very good symmetry.

We really dont know how important symmetry and polish are with an excellent cut and if it is better to drop a colour grade to improve the clarity and polish grade.

Any help will be most appreciated as we are now very confused! :?

Thanks a lot,
Andrea

Which lab grades the cut performance of the stones? Only AGS grades the cut performance of princess, anything else is assigned by the vendor and to us, who has not seen the stone, these cut grades are meaningless.

There is negligible difference between Ex/VG symm/polish to the averaged person, without training and equipment. Same with difference in VS1 and VVS1, you will not see anything if reliably graded by GIA/AGS, any other labs or inhouse grading will need to be taken with a grain handful of salt.

Both rings are from Tiffanys, so they do their own certificates, which are based on GIA grading, or so we were told!

Assuming you've seen them both in person and their light performance looks identical to your eyes, I'd go with the F stone. You'll never notice the difference between a VVS and a VS without a loupe, but you might be able to see a bit of difference in color when tilting the diamond on an angle.
