Hello Everyone,

I have been researching for a while now with the goal of getting a ring as close to perfect for her as possible and I happened to come across this gold mine of information and help here at PS just recently (I wish it would have been sooner but better late than never).

I am looking at a platinum setting that she fell in love with from Martin Flyer (link and link). I have tried contacting Martin Flyer directly to see if there is any difference between the above two rings but unfortunately have been unsuccessful in connecting with them. I also called Blue Nile and spoke with them and they stated there is no difference between the two. In regards to the setting I wanted to show what the diamond I am purchasing will be set in for reference. I am also curious about your thoughts on the side diamonds if the different tiers would make a noticeable difference or not and general thoughts about those options. Also, if anyone knows where the best deal is for this setting that would be wonderful as well, I am always looking and trying to compare.

The major guidance needed is with the center diamond. This is my first major diamond purchase and I would love assistance from those much more knowledgeable than I to help her get the absolute best possible diamond that she more than deserves.

On to the facts, please see the above links to see the platinum setting the princess cut diamond will be going into. The budget for the diamond alone is around $7,000 with wiggle room in the case of a can't miss deal. The following attributes for the diamond are listed in order of importance:

1) An incredible combination of brilliance, fire and scintillation (based on my research and current understanding cut, symmetry and polish are what makes this up).
2) Want it to be "eye clean" which I understand is subjective but I am not concerned about inclusions if they are not visible without a loupe or microscope and don't negatively impact the brilliance, fire and scintillation.
3) Next is color which is tough for me as I am color blind and can have a difficult time picking up on the light shade differences. She is not so I want to make sure that the color is not anything that she keeps thinking her diamond is dirty with a yellow/brown hue (reminder it is being set in platinum if that changes anything on the color front). Also, I know little to nothing about fluorescence but I am open to learning if it is felt based on the criteria it would work well.
4) Looking for the largest diamond meeting the above criteria.

Cut: based on my understanding this will be the biggest factor (along with symmetry and polish) in getting the incredible combination of brilliance, fire and scintillation being looked for (ideal vs excellent? thoughts on diamonds from the high tier lines of Brian Gavin, Whiteflash, etc.?)

Clarity: VS1? As stated I am not worried if the clarity rating is not that high again as long as the above holds true with it being "eye clean" and not hampering the brilliance, fire and scintillation

Color: I want it to look white but I know I can't always pick up on different shades....fluorescence?

Carat/Weight: The largest diamond meeting the above criteria in the budget (how large the face shows is more important than weight but assuming ideal cut or similar diamonds to meet the criteria that will directly correlate to weight based on my understanding).

I apologize about the long-winded post and appreciate anyone who even takes the time to read it. I am wide open to any advice, insight, etc. Thanks in advance for any information and guidance, it is immensely appreciated! Please don't hesitate to ask any questions or correct something that is not accurate this is why I am seeking help from the experts. Thanks again!

I am still looking for advice and would greatly appreciate anyone who took the time to help out. I would like to know if I am on the right path based on the diamond qualities being looked for and also thoughts on the diamonds from the likes of A Cut Above from WhiteFlash or Black/Signature by Brian Gavin (just using them as examples I am open to most any trusted retailer). Are the performance of diamonds in these collections on another level or is it felt diamonds of the same quality and light performance can be had for cheaper prices? Please help me as this is a big purchase and I want to make sure the lady gets the best diamond! Thanks in advance!

For a princess, i would absolutely go with a super ideal. A super ideal is precisely cut and you can expect superior light performance and that is backed up with an ASET and Idealscope. Now, can you find a non super ideal stone that sparkles like crazy? absolutely! It's just going to take some work and just looking around a bit, WF princess stones are priced really well.

these are all really nice size within your budget. You would just need to ask WF if they can get that Martin Flyer setting.

@farrahlyn gave you some great links. H color is very safe. I color is "white" for most viewers, but color might be detected from the side.

I found this really pretty stone from one of the vendors we love around here, Diamonds by Lauren. Before you judge it, due to the clarity rating, read the description. It has great light return and that feather really does blend in from most angles. You could request a video to make your own judgement. This is way less than your other options.
You can request an ASET on thisfrom JamesAllen.
You can get the setting from JamesAllen (though they show it we the stone set way too high in the prongs). My hesitation is that the side stones will be "stock" and not hand-selected like your center will be. I personally prefer all my stones to be of the same high-performance.
Depending on where you end up with you budget, I think if you worked with David Klass or another custom maker (or DBL or WF if you buy the diamond from them), that ring could go from pretty to amazing. The halo stones are not the best set and they really need to be tilted away from level. With those changes, it would be extraordinary.

If you like WF, you could get a price for the ring/setting from them with more ACA side stones.

Thanks farrahlyn and rockysalamander for the information and links! Good to know that H is a safe color grade to aim for in my search.

Rockysalamander I noticed that both of the diamonds you posted are rated as Very Good in cut. In your opinion do you think there is not a noticeable difference in the light performance/sparkle of diamonds from Very Good to Excellent? Also, I like your idea of having either a custom maker or WhiteFlash or someone else help to customize the ring with better diamonds! Do you mind elaborating further on the halo not being the best set and having them tilted away from level.

Farrahlyn thanks for your input and the links to those diamonds! Whiteflash seems to be where I keep ending up when searching around for the best deal on a super ideal princess which is why I am asking the below questions.

As far as princess cut diamonds are concerned are there specific retailers known to have the best cuts? For example if I am comparing different diamonds say from James Allen, WhiteFlash, Blue Nile, etc. I understand they can all sell a GIA/AGS super ideal rated diamond and that objectively is a way to compare them. I am curious if the in house standards that these companies have (example A Cut Above or something comparable) if any specific company is known for having diamonds that are noticeably more brilliant than others? I understand this question may open itself up to more personal opinion responses as opposed to facts but I am still interested in hearing everyone's opinion.

Thanks to everyone so far for the help and please keep the comments, links, opinions coming! They are all greatly appreciated!

Rockysalamander I noticed that both of the diamonds you posted are rated as Very Good in cut.
GIA does not provide cut grades for the princess cut. The DBL stone has VG for other criteria. This vendor has a very good eye for good performing stones and will be totally honest with you. The JA stone is EX on the other criteria.

When we personally can see and evaluate a stone, many PS veterans will look at VG stones in person. But, buying online requires us to pick stones without the ability to really see it in person. So, we will be more conservative. But, with certain vendors (like DBL and many others), I am personally comfortable with their eyes instead of my own -- especially on when looking for fancy-cuts like a princess.

In diamond terms, brilliance is white light return. Fire are colored light return (usually small pinpoint of high-intensity light) and scintillation are the flashes of light. In total, we tend to call this performance. So, I suspect you are asking which diamond is the "most sparkly", which to me would translate to the best cut with a balance of brilliance and fire and high precision. So, enter the super-ideal branded princess cuts. I like both Whiteflash and BrianGavin's inhouse princess cuts. Good Old Gold has a solasfera princess cut, it has more facets and appeals to some and not others (though there is no question is has amazing light performance). Eightstar - Elara is a nice princess, but not often seen. There are literally hundreds of other branded princess cuts, but not all will increase your guarantee of good performance.
