Hi,

I am new here, but I have been researching here for few weeks now, and I need some advice on the princess cut.

Let me know if this is good to buy, and any danger of chipping while setting.

Here is the spec:

Shape: Princess
Carat Weight: 1.5CT
Color: E
Clarity: VVS1
Depth: 70%
Table: 72%
Crown height: 9.6%
Pavilion height: 41.8%
Girdle: Stk-Tk
Cut: Excellent
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Fluorescence: None
Certified: GIA
Ration: 1:1

Thank you~

No one can comment? please?

I fear that you have mistyped the pavilion-depth, but that is not the main reason for the absence of replies.

If you are asking about cut-quality, it is impossible to base any comment on these figures. A good starting-point would be to have an ASET-pic of the stone.

Also, please provide a GIA report-number or a copy of the report. GIA does not give a cut-grade for princess-cuts, so I wonder where the cut-grade comes from.

Live long,

Ditto. It looks as if it isn't a top cut Princess from the info we have, table is greater than the depth and usually the reverse is preferred, the crown height could be greater too and that should be pavilion depth, not height. Is the diamond with an online seller so you can get pictures and an ASET image? Or have you seen it in person? From the info we have, no reason to suppose it would be more prone to chipping than any other Princess but we can't tell much without images so see if you can get the above.

Girdle from the description should be relatively safe. But as Paul mentioned, something is wrong with the total measurement. With a depth of 70%, crown height of 9.6 and pavilion depth of 41.8% you accound for only 51.4% of the total depth. Thick girdle is only in the region of 5-6%. GIA do not list crown and pavilion height in their report.

Also, no way to judge a princess cut performance based on just numbers, will need an ASET image.

Hi there,

So, Here is the spec that was on the GIA website. The number “Crown height: 9.6%
Pavilion Depth: 41.8%” was obtained by the online dealer using the “scanner.” Not really sure how that works.

GIA Report
Square Modified Brilliant
Measurements: 6.41 x 6.40 x 4.50 mm
Carat Weight: 1.51 carat
Color Grade: E
Clarity Grade: VVS1
Proportions:
Depth: 70.3%
Table: 72%
Girdle: Slightly Thick to Thick
Culet: None
Finish:
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Fluorescence: None

I think most of the websites that were selling the Princess cut all listed this stone as being Excellent Cut. But as members mentions if GIA doesn’t grade Excellent, who does, and is trust worthy?

Also, the online dealer is nice enough to have the stone appraised by 3rd party before sending it out.

Thank you so~ much for helping me.

Have a great day~

Yes, thought that must have been a scanner as you had the crown height. Can you get any images of the diamond? Not much we can tell you without unfortunately.

GIA only grade round diamonds for cut quality at this time, however it is common practice for vendors to assign a cut grade of their own to diamonds, this does not always mean much however and is certainly no guarantee of a well cut diamond.

My guess is that the stone is above average cut quality, but not up to the very highest standards (sadly, very few princess are cut to their full potential - most are cut for weight retention).
I'd guess 7.5-8/10 for visual performance. To most people's eyes, it will probably look very good. The fact that the cutter bothered to spend extra time giving it Ex/Ex polish and symmetry is encouraging, but the thick girdle is hiding some weight that is not contributing to anything other than making the 1.5ct level. Cutters strive to meet a certain carat weight, which can be at the expense of beauty, or slightly smaller face-up size due to thick girdles.

But without seeing the diamond, I am just speculating on the odds.

I think that you've pitched clarity too high; VVS1 could easily be downgraded to VS1 without any noticeable effect (other than on your wallet or the size of stone you could buy).
VS2 would probably look just the same, too. You might even be able to go down to SI1 and not see any difference, but take care in the SI grades.
You might be able to drop the colour to F, too.
