hello all ... new to this site .... I was offered a great ? deal on a ruby / diamond ring that was aig appraised at around 30k ... he wanted 10 cents on the dollar .... good deal or scam ? .... it was a well known auction house ... thank you for your time

Your best bet would be to get an independent appraisal.

At minimum do you have the certifications on the diamonds?

T'aint the auction house that you're putting your confidence in, it's the unidentified 'appraiser'. Tiny details make a BIG difference in this business and it's important to understand how they came to that conclusion and what they mean by it.

Alarm bells are going off for me. I'd definitely find an IA that is well trusted and see what s/he says. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is!

IN almost every case, sellers that use "appraised values" to try and bolster their sales pitch are to be avoided.
At the very least, I'd advise totally ignoring the value stated.
