Just read Betsy''s advice- good stuff.

Someone mentioned a US diamond pricing
guide. Is there such a thing available on the
net? I thought rappaport was insiders'' stuff.

Besides, how do you judge a good deal?

Some people say 15% to 20% below rap.

Now- is there a different rap for ideals? H&As?

Or would a good deal on an H&A be the same
as a regular full rap price?

Doing a pricescope search for .60 H&A''s in the
D&E range (VS2-SI1) I got per carat prices of
anywhere between $2000 and $4400 often on
the same color and clarity and from the same
company.

Any explanations? Can the per carat value
of 2 H&A .60s DVS1 vary that much?

What is the main parameter to watch for and
guideline and how much of a markup should
you expect when buying offline vs. online?

Thanks for your thoughts.

I don't know everything, but pricescope does have a price stats section. You can search by either cut or carat size.

The "price" is set by a merchant. It can readily vary widely, as you have seen. By shopping, you can get a diamond that is priced right....Then you are buying a stone that represents a good "value".... Price and value are defined differently. Shopping for value is key to diamonds.

Forget Rap and discounts from Rap. The Pricescope search means far more than Rapaport's list when it comes to fine make diamonds and the competitive internet market.
