Hello!
35.gif

Does anyone know how the price of an OEC compares to more modern cuts? Also, so far I''ve only found OEC''s with grading reports from EGL. From other posts on this board, I gather thet EGL does not have a good reputation. Does GIA or AGS grade OEC''s? Wow, that''s a lot of acronyms...

Thanks for your help!

I personally have never seen an OEC graded by AGS or GIA. Don't know whether they are out there or not. Don't disregard all EGL certs though. EGL USA certs are much more accurate than other EGL labs. My OEC was graded by EGL USA and was confirmed accurate by an independant appraiser that is considered a tough grader locally.

Also, in my search I found that OECs are no longer as discounted price-wise as they used to be. They used to be considered less desirable than modern cuts, but they have regained popularity. I found that a well-cut OEC would be priced similar to a medern RB. Maybe others can chime in about what they found in their searches for antique cuts...

FacetFire,
Who was your local appraisor? I need to have an appraisal done and am looking. Would you recommend him/her?
Thanks!

I hope you see this: There are two appraisers I''d go to in the Chapel Hill area. One is Alan at Grimball''s. Though he is at Grimball''s, I think he grades their stuff pretty harshly anyway. The other is a woman named Kim Peracci, 919-929-0763. She is completely independant if I recall correctly. Kim and Alan are known to be two of the best appraisers in the area, or so I''ve heard. Hope that helps!

I used to make a market in OEC diamonds from 1983 until 2004. I supplied prices to the trade sort of like Rapaport and dealt in these cuts exclusively. They remain popular, some look wonderful, but few match "Ideal" performance levels. They are a great alternative.

Prices vary widely as they alll are second hand items bought at different prices and re-inserted into the market. One can ask a high price, but accept a lower offer on such merchandise. It is a more flexible market where controlled (uncut) rough costs are not part of the equation.

Look out always for misgraded stones already set into jewelry. It is darned difficult to accurately assess the right color grade in many circumstances.
